It’s Monday, but not a real Monday because I’m still on my break from work. This one was really easy, except Purple was nonsense.

Purple only makes sense if you think like an American. Or are Irish, I suppose.

Gave up on reverse rainbow but was able to piece it together with some categories out of the way.

Really didn’t want to group ‘athletics’ in with blue as it seemed too general. Luckily was oblivious to the ____pool red herring.

How so? I don’t think “opal” has ever been a brand available in the US, although I’ve seen it in books. And I’m not even sure what brand “outie” is supposed to be. Audi? That ain’t no homophone.

(No, i didn’t get purple today. I often don’t get purple, but usually think it’s fine when i see the reveal. Today? Yeah, still not seeing it.)

Those are the main English-speaking groups i know of that would have dialects that would pronounce Outie with a d to be a homophone for Audi.

Diving straight into the red herrings

I guess there are several American accents. Those are very different words to me, with my American accent. The initial vowel isn’t even the same, although it’s close enough that I’d accept it. But the t and d are definitely distinct.

I failed to see the red herring. What was it?

Scratch that, I missed my cue. Probably will get run out on a rail. Felt it was a sure thing, but the Magic 8 Ball said I had no shot.

pool

I actually fell for two red herrings on Monday, though the second one might not have been designed as such: The _____ pool others have mentioned, and also _____ line. I think that first one might have been an actual category, at some point in the past.

Also, since when is “athletics” an Olympic event? I’ve never heard of that, and it seems way too general.

I did get purple, though, at least, once it was all that was left.

For me the t and d are pretty close, but the initial vowels are definitely distinct. I wouldn’t expect there are many accents where they’re proper homophones. Honestly ‘infinity’ as a “homophone” for Infiniti when the latter is just a stylized respelling of the same word is just as problematic. Homophones are distinct words that are pronounced the same. Infinity and Infiniti are the same word that are spelled differently.

That said, once I figured out the category it was easy enough to identify all the members.

They’re all categories of Olympic events, not singular events. They all feature in this list on the official Paris 2024 website, for example.

Whereas i looked at the solution, and said, “huh?”

It took me a minute to realize they wanted Audi and outie to be pronounced the same. Those just aren’t… And i agree with you about “Infiniti”.

I’m going with, “this connection was not a good one.”

That’s probably where the puzzle-maker got those terms from, but it still seems off: Triathlon is an individual event, and would seem to fall under the “athletics” category (that’s where all the other n-athlons are).

I thought “athletics” was a more international term for what the U.S. calls “track and field”.

Athletics is the official Olympic name for what Americans usually call track and field

Triathlon is a separate sport not included in anything else. That’s because it includes running, swimming, and cycling, so doesn’t belong with any of those sports

Exact opposite for me.
