Green leapt right out at me, so I got it out of the way.
Then I was pretty sure I had blue and green, but they were both kind of vague and boring categories. So I highlighted the remaining four to see if I could find that connection first. EEK made me think it was a ”minus a letter” gimmick, and Bob’s your uncle.
It’s Saturday, and I am ashamed to say this is the first time I have cheated to confirm a guess. Sometimes this game gets so frustrating it drives you to extremes.

Quite surprised what I thought might be a red herring - wasn’t at all.
I think I found the red herring, though I didn’t fall for it: blanket, umbrella, general, overall
But it didn’t matter, because, first, I had none of the relevant knowledge needed for blue, and second, lacking that knowledge, I assumed that SOS must be one of the purples, and so there was no chance I’d have figured out what purple was, either. Crash and burn.

I debated between starting with the actual yellows or the red herring suggested by @Chronos and then got lucky. I legitimately saw the greens. I would never have gotten purple, and like @Chronos , don’t have the domain knowledge to get blue.
My husband and i tried it for a while, and made a bad guess that we knew was two and two. And then gave up. But instead of guessing completely randomly until the game showed me the answers, i decided to use what i knew about how many of each group of words could go together, and assumed the red herring would have one from each color. And was surprised that worked, and i got purple. I read the blues to my husband before clicking them, and we still had no idea. I suspect I’d recognize the songs if i heard them, but don’t know the names of them.

Not a good day. Jumped at green too soon so there goes RR. Then went for wet WORK instead of wet BAR to complete the screwup. Blue was leftovers.

I was so absolutely certain that yellow was a red herring that I resisted it to the very end, even though I had no idea what blue was.
The error was that I included WET WORK with purple (instead of BLANKET). Shoulda figured that was a little too… much for NYT.
Blue was the category I had to cheat with, I had picked them and thought I knew the category they might have been in, but it was just guessing, so I Googled to double-check. I’ve never done that before, but I felt a need. I was right, though, so I should’ve trusted my instincts.
Anyway, here’s Sunday’s puzzle, and it was a tough one. I was never going to get Blue as it’s another sporty Americanism.

Had a lot of trouble with this one. Fell for a red herring, played leftovers for purple on first guess and crashed. Compounded it by playing the red herring next. Yuck.

Never heard “can” used that way. Is that where “the can can” comes from?
Monday again. But I’m still on break, so it’s just another day. This was not easy, but I managed to do it clean, in rainbow order.

Well, with two categories down, 8 items left, and being tired of looking at it, I used process of elimination to get the last two categories in the nick of time.

I object! Mannerism is not an art style.
It isn’t?
