If You Like "Wordle", Try "Connections"

Yes, I completed purple first this time, which is rare.

Phanton Tollbooth, LoL. Liked the book, didn’t care for the animated film.

I felt like there were three purple categories today. Yellow was kind enough to volunteer to simplify the board. I recognized blue as a category early on (I was a theater kid in HS), but didn’t know “Sunset”, so that had to wait for a late guess. Actual purple wasn’t so purple-y, but I’ve not heard of “Drugstore Cowboy”.

I got purple first which is really astonishing because that’s an area I know the least about in trivia contests.

I was generationally advantaged to get purple first

A 1989 movie by Gus Van Sant.

Figured something like that. I prefer Dime Store Cowgirl anyway.

You can learn of them in The Simpsons, S3E3, When Flanders Failed. Personally, growing up in the 60s as a lefty, I learned how to operate right-handed objects (such as scissors and can openers) readily. OTOH, I have a twenty-one-year old lefty nephew who cannot operate a standard set of scissors.

Not happy with purple today

PICKLE, DODGE, KICK, SOFT and PAINT all equally fit. Guess who didn’t get the correct group in four.

Sometimes in Connections there are only three words that seem to fit a category, and sometimes, as in that case, there are five. This is usually a red herring and you should move onto another category.

I didn’t even consider PAINT as a possibility for Purple, and solved it as my second category.

Of course, I solved Green by thinking they were all computer terms, although one was misspelled.

Today (3/10/25), I guessed the blue category (more or less), but instead of STATUE OF LIBERTY I included SPHYNX, because of its missing nose. what is it about the STATUE OF LIBERTY that makes it fit the category? I honestly have no idea. Am I that ignorant of its history?

I wondered the same thing.

And I really had no idea that RAGAMUFFIN was a breed of cat.

I Googled because a couple of other items were recognizable as cat breeds.

It changed color because of oxidation. When built, it was copper colored

ETA the cat breed is spelled sphynx, but the landmark is spelled sphinx

That change in spelling was a clue.

One of these things is not like the other. The other three all have prominent features that are flaws. Cracked, leaning, missing arms. Oxidation of copper isn’t a flaw. I thought the fourth was going to be the Sphinx with its missing nose, but I figured it fit in the "cat"egory better than the Statue of Liberty.

They are soooo fluffy.

I struggled a bit with the pangram today (but got yesterday’s as the first word), but otherwise plowed through fairly quickly.

But the word sphinx doesn’t appear in the puzzle, sphynx does

The Statue of Liberty was originally built in France, then disassembled, and moved to New York. When it was reassembled, the upraised arm was attached a couple feet off from where it was supposed to be. I don’t what other issues that caused with the cladding or anything else. It’s not obvious to look at; more of a bit of historical trivia. When the Statue was refurbished a few decades ago, I believe there was some thought given to correcting the error, but it was left as it was.

Plus, in its early days I think visitors were allowed up to the torch, bit that’s been closed for ages. So there are a couple alterations from how it was originally conceived.

Oh man, for the first time in forever I literally could not get a single group today (March 10).

  1. I have zero knowledge of cat breeds.

  2. I last saw The Big Lebowski about 20 years ago and remember almost nothing about it

  3. I could conceivably have figured out the green and blue sets, but I would have had to be lucky and I wasn’t.
