There’s an old phrase “little pitchers have big ears”, which means that children often will pick up what adults are saying. That helped me solve the category today.
Summary
After seeing JOKER and BANE in the same puzzle I though for sure that was the red herring. Got that one first and was surprised it was the blue category. The rest besides purple just came immeditely after that.
A cornfield is full of ears of corn.
A musician has an “ear” for music.
The handles on old-style ceramic pitchers are called ears.
There’s an old saying that goes “The walls have ears” when you think someone may be eavesdropping.
What was the red herring supposed to be today? Solved it perfect in about 30 seconds, starting with purple.
My one wrong guess was The four seasons.
Me too. Easiest one ever
Yep, that nailed me as well.
I didn’t even notice that, in part because I spotted the Blue category immediately after the Purple. I was wondering how many people these days even know some of the Blue entries (in that context).
The other categories were pretty simple after that.
Yeah, me too. Purple just jumped right out at first glance.
Actually, Blue was my default category. Not sure I would ever have gotten it otherwise.
I got Purple second and was surprised to see it was Purple.
I think purple was practically a gimme with FALLOPIAN on there. What else could it be an adjective for?
As @Quimby pointed out, it’s one of five terms that start with the name of a season, which is often a purple category thing.
Five? I think I see only four.
SPRINGBOARD, SUMMERTIME, WINTERGREEN, and both FALLOPIAN & AUTUMN LEAVES.
Sorry. I missed Fallopian.
I completely missed the misdirect and got purple right away, due to the gimme word, and was surprised that qualified as a purple category.
Once again my thesaurus brain saves me from a homophone red herring (animal names, specifically common North American mammals). I got green in seconds, but even purple was synonyms today.
Heh. That was the first thing I tried today. After that swing and a miss, it was relatively easy, I thought.
OK, today’s (5/3) was ridiculous. Only the first or second one I’ve failed to solve, and I’ve done all 692, with 564 zero mistakes. At least I feel better the stats show most players (63%!) failed to solve it as well.
I managed to get Purple somehow, which removed a few red herrings (Neti (pots?), Orgo (classes w/ Lit)) but that still wasn’t enough… I think I somehow convinced myself I had already guessed Yellow, when I had actually guessed two combos with Ill in it. And my final guess was close on Green, but I had Shell instead of Paste. Bummer that I had the right idea on both Green and Yellow but since they each had 5 possibilities, none of which overlapped with Purple I couldn’t make it work.
Totally agree, although I managed to solve it with one guess remaining.
I got Purple first and Yellow last. I’m certain that’s the first time that’s ever happened to me. After Purple, I struggled but finally got Green. And then I got Blue, but my reasoning was that they all ended in ‘LL’. Which was correct, in a way.
And I guess I’m too old to realize the slang meaning in all the Yellow words.
