Same here. Red herrings can give useful information, though. Once you know it’s incorrect, and you don’t get the “one away” message, that probably means that those four clues belong in four different groups.
I couldn’t find a good fourth name, and just having the three obvious ones temporarily selected reeked of fish. Purple was so obvious today I was suspicious of that, too.
I didn’t even notice that red herring.
Sometimes a red herring is so obvious and then it turns out it’s not a red herring at all and was a correct category. So I am not ashamed when I fall for them.
Totally missed it myself. My ten-year-old daughter got the purple right off the bat. You go, girl! Been a few days since a purple first.
A sketch comedy show I used to watch would sometimes do these little quizzes of things that sounded vaguely similar. The only one I remember was “imported SUV, or Bruce Willis’s child?” Kinda reminds me of a good connecctions puzzle.
I foresee some possible grumbling about today’s puzzle.
I got today’s but was surprised that the one I was sure would be purple was not and there was a purple I had literally never heard of before (but luckily it was my final clue). So yeah, grumble grumble 
Let me guess - blue? Yeah, I started with that one and was rather surprised it was only blue. No trouble at all with the rest, although I suspect I know which purple one you didn’t know too.
It’s like when the puzzle refers to people and TV shows I’ve never heard of. What can you do but wing it?

Unfamiliar references happen a lot when I watch Only Connect. If the category is something like Blue Peter Presenters, I’m not too disappointed not to get it.
It’s almost scary how good the contestants are at questions of American trivia.
