Today’s red herring was obvious but fun. I guess it would have been more difficult to find other legitimate categories for ZEPP or GUMM.
I did not know there was a red herring nevermind an obvious one.
Got GYP straight away, put the first two down before thinking whether I could get purple first.
I am not very familiar with the blue group, only got it by elimination (I did not spend much time on it) but on seeing the answer I did know all the elements were in the group.
Is there some advantage to getting purple first?
Satisfaction. It’s considered the hardest, and usually involves word play, so eliminating it early makes the rest a bit easier to work out. Generally.
Also if you care about stats it tracks how many Purple first wins you have.
Thanks!
Yeah, it’s just a sub-game we play with ourselves to keep it interesting. If I get purple first, then I try to get “reverse rainbow,” or purple-blue-green-yellow. It’s kind of how when I play Wordle I do NOT start with typical starting words like CRANE or ADIEU, but rather a word relevent to my environment (like a sign I’ve seen) or something I’ve been thinking about. I find just playing the same or similar words to start to be boring AF. (Heck, I find Wordle boring overall, but my daughter likes it, so this is how we play the game together.) And, thing is, we still have a perfectly symmetrical distribution centered at 4 guesses, much like I had when playing a more deliberate and efficient strategy.
GROUCH, CHIC, HARP, MARX
I just did June 28th’s game, Puzzle #748, and failed 100%. I couldn’t see ANYTHING. I used up all my guesses on “one away” results for what turned out to be the Purple. The rest, even the Yellow, was just invisible to me. Looking at the correct answers now, I would not have got them after fifty tries.
So congratulations to any who get them all and shrug like they were obvious, you sure got me beat today.
Today was easy for me but my overall solve rate is 80%. I suck at Connections.
I got it but it wasn’t easy.
Yellow took a little thinking but got it reasonably quickly
I knew 3 of the purple and made an educated guess on the 4th based on it being a brand name for sewing machines
I eventually thought of another meaning for one of the greens that enabled me to get the green group and hence the puzzle.
I just did what I think was January 28 game and while I got it I was extremely lucky.
First was going for things kids play with and managed to get yellow. After wasting all my other guesses I saw blue. Was looking at last names of actors and got purple for the wrong reason.

All our dog toys have bells or squeakers in them, so I had one fakeout even though I could see the pattern in yellow.
I saw the other three patterns more-or-less simultaneously after that.
Now you lot have got me trying to get purple first at great peril.

Wow got the purple like immediately and then made three mistakes with no correct guesses thought for sure I would fail but somehow made it through. Green was my last one and I had no idea what it was until I saw the answer.
Got purple right away, and figured most dopers would (due to science and historical literacy). Saw the correct meaning for Drove, which seemed like the key to solving the rest.
A fun thing about Connections is how randomly you can be blind to the obvious. In this puzzle, June 28, Bone was the word that baffled me. I could only tie it to the other three words by thinking of the match cut in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Yellow, purple, green, blue for me today, no errors. The first two came almost reflexively. The last two I had to think about for two minutes.
Perfect rainbow with no mistakes, but it was not easy. I enjoyed the mental workout today and was quite pleased with myself. I even figured out the purple category before submitting.
Today was a weird one for me. (June 28) I got the purple first, after only a little thought. But I completely missed the other three colors. For green I had the right idea but couldn’t quite get the four words. For yellow and blue I was completely on the wrong track.

Easy one today except I didn’t quite get green and I had a slightly different definition for purple ( less specific).
