If you were Pratchett, what would be your next Discworld book

Pterry has created a very rich world, with a lot of characters to play with. He seems to have abandoned **Rincewind ** and the Witches, letting the faculty of UU do cameos and leaving Granny W a supporting role in the juveniles. I also think that Making Money was the first DW book that didn’t have an appearance by DEATH.

Anyway, If I could decide what to come next, it’d be a full backstory on Vetenari. Things are hinted in Night Watch (the best to date) and in numerous other books. I’m currently re-reading **Jingo ** and I think that a story told from Vetenari’s POV would be quite interesting.

I agree. But by far my favourite stories are the ones that center around the Watch, and particularly Sam Vimes. So keep them coming pretty-please Terry.

Nope. He shows up for

the old woman who wills the bank to her dog, and her dog to Lipwig.

To answer the OP’s question, I wouldn’t mind a sequel to The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.

Something about Eskarina.

I’d like to see the Alchemist’s Guild get a book.

Lot of potential (energy, to be released explosively) there.

I was recently rereading the Watch books, and it occurred to me that it would be really interesting if Pterry wrote a book about how the young, somewhat innocent Sam from Night Watch became the grizzled, cynical, hard drinking Captain Vimes of Guards! Guards! It could be combined with Charlie Tan’s idea of doing Vetinari’s backstory, and show Vetinari consolidating his power while Vimes becomes more and more disillusioned. It’d end on kind of a bummer, though, as you’d sort of have to leave Vimes in the gutter in order to end where Guards! Guards! picks up.

The only places we haven’t really seen in the books so far are Tsort and Howondaland, although they do show up briefly in Eric. So if he wanted to do another book based on a place who’s resemblance to a place in our world is totally coincidental, they’re available.

Arguably that was actually “A Hat Full Of Sky”.

The Life And Times Of B.S. Johnson.

The big plans Vetenari has for the Anhk-Morpork Underground that were started at the end of THUD! and mentioned briefly in Making Money will surely have to be the subject of another novel, though not so soon after M.M. So the next one won’t be a Guards/Anhk-Morpork novel.

The Wizards and Rincewind have become semi-retired to the Science of Discworld collaborations. Unless Pterry wants to explore the rimlands discovered in Last Hero.

Death/Susan: Wasn’t the last one Thief of Time? It’s been awhile, but they only work well when Pterry has some weighty philosophy to write about.

The witches have pretty much passed the torch to Tiffany Aching. Depends on if he has something new and funny to write about the Mac Nac Feegle.

Possibly he’ll do another stand-alone novel, or one which has Vimes doing a brief cameo as ambassador, like Monstrous Regiment.

It might be interesting if Rincewind, who left when Ankh-Moorpork was right out of a sword and sorcery book, returns to see the "modern"Ankh-Moorpork, which is looking more like London with every book.

A lot of plot threads got dropped as we get either the Tiffany Aching books, for the witches, or the “let’s start up a new facet of modern society” for Ankh-Moorpork.

I’d like more Moist Von Lipwig books, but what I’d like even more would be to back up a bit, erase Making Money from existence, and redo it. I felt it was a bit … phoned in. The main premise of Moist’s predicament was interesting, but the setup felt very drawn-out and awkward (especially compared to the setup in Going Postal) and his big idea near the end regarding the golems seemed kind of … I dunno, vague and thrown in.

I think Pterry was off his game with this one. Which is a shame, since otherwise he’s shown an absolutely astounding ability to maintain quality while still cranking out books like mad.

But other than that, I would probably do a one-off. The witches seem to have evolved to a state where there’s not much more to do with them – likewise the guards, the wizards, and DEATH. It’s hard to imagine where to go next. Then again, I thought that before Thud came out and it proved there was somewhere new to go, so who knows.

And Susan. I’m not a big fan of Susan but even I’m wondering what she’s up to.

I’d like to see a prequel about either Leonard of Quirm or Bloody Stupid Johnson. Or at least some more backstory about them. I’d also like to see an angle about the children on Discworld. And there always has to be more Death. he’s just one of the best characters there. Has there been a book that goes into depth about the Theives’ Guild? (It’s been a while since I’ve read them all–I’m in the process of rereading now.)

More Nanny Ogg.

Perhaps something about those traveling caravans of gypsy-like folk who navigate the rivers doing trade? They seemed cool and the constant change of location could provide interesting plot opportunities.

And I, also, would like an update on Maurice et al.

Time to do another Unseen University book. Let’s see what Ponder is up to, in depth. Maybe get Ridcully involved in a plot against the Bursar by some nefarious outsider. All sorts of possibilities. That, or the rise and fall and rise and fall and rise and fall of CMOT Dibbler.

Pratchett once noted that the problem with the Watch is that it’s become extremely difficult to write a book about criminals without it becoming a Watch book. If that’s the case, I think something about the Thieves Guild might be a great deal of fun.

I’d also like to see more books about the Assassins. I didn’t generally like Pyramids, but I appreciated the setting.

I’d like a Rincewind-goes-to-Howandaland book, myself. Perhaps up a big river to some mad colonialist. I’d call it “Dark of Heartiness” or somesuch.

Let’s have Witches Abroad only more so! Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg and Agnes Nitt (what ever happened to her after Maskerade?) go all the way 'round the Disc! They visit Klaatch, (modern) Ephebe, (modern) Omnia, Djelibeybe, Tsort, the Agatean Empire, Fourecks, Bhangbhangduc, and the Agatean Empire!
