If your Dope is running slow.

It seems to be the fault of this mob. http://www.rubiconproject.com/

Anyone else having delays while this site seems to be scanning the Dope?

Rubicon isn’t scanning the SDMB; it’s the supplier of our remnant ads. There are delays occasionally due to slow response from the ad server. This is an inherent problem of pulling content from third-party sites. Rubicon is a major distributor; naturally we and no doubt all other Rubicon clients will beef if delays become a chronic problem.

No delays here. In fact, the board seems to be running much better lately, from my own perspective. Compared to a few years ago when I’d get time outs, slow connections causing multiple posts and lost posts if I didn’t save, things are VERY nice these days.

Well, I’m sure we are all glad you are happy, xtisme, but meanwhile, I’m still having to wait at least a minute for each page to load fully, while the page displays at the bottom left, Read tap-cdn.rubiconproject.com, and it’s starting to piss me off.

I’m with xtisme - the Board has been running much better over the past year or so. It’s now quite rare that I get that “database error” which used to be so common.

So, props to Jerry or whoever’s been working away on the problem.

It is true that overall the problems are mostly resolved. However, lately I have expreienced a new kind of slowness. Since the new system of linking links or whatever it is began, the page opens but then the screen displays the “wait wait wait” symbol (used to be hourglass) for about a minute on multi-page threads, just a few seconds on shorter ones. This is completely new behavior and only happens here.

What I can’t figure out is why it only seems to affect some people. For me, all that happens is that the external links take a second longer to load. I wonder if some computers are too slow and take too long processing the javascript. Or maybe too fast and overwhelm the server.

I’ve never seen that at all. I remember the hourglass, but haven’t seen that in years.

It would seem so. My home computer takes too long to load threads these days, but in the last week, on my mom’s computer and on my daughters laptop, both using different IPs and different machines, I have no problem. So, it’s certainly got something to do with my home operating system/browser/etc rather than the SDMB.

Since you seem to need it in Braille, let me spell it out…I’m not having the same issue. Now, unless you think I have some kind of sooper sekrit connection to the SD or level of access, that would indicate that the problem isn’t the 'dope, but something with YOUR (and a few others) connection, OS or browser. So, you should probably start THERE in figuring out your issue, instead of whining about the board. Hopefully what I was getting at is clear to you now…if not, perhaps I can send you some pictures next time…

Me too - I’m getting half-loaded pages with the “loading” icon running, that never resolve to a fully complete page - sometimes loading, say, 10 posts and leaving out the other 40.

It’s only been doing it for 2-3 days. It’s a huge pain in the arse.

I see you’re in the UK too, so there may be a geographical component.

A few things here, old sport:

  1. The hangups are being caused for various people on this board only. The rest of the intarweb is working fine.
  2. The effect on the user is that the SMDB doesn’t work.
  3. It’s TPTB’s decision to use an advertising service that has lately begun to fuck up performance of the board for some people.

Therefore whining does seem entirely appropriate.

Why is it slowing up things for people who don’t see the ads (members)?

ivan, if it’s really pissing you off, consider changing your hosts file to not serve those ads.

Might be a browser or OS issue then. Which was the point I was TRYING to address originally, before the OP decided to get all snarky and nasty about it. I’m not having ANY issues here…none. In the past I’ve had plenty, but everything is running smoothly from my perspective. What that should say is that it’s not the 'dope, per se, but something on the client side…no?

This isn’t something the OP specifically stated, so it wasn’t something I was addressing. Seems curious that this is the ONLY site that’s effecting you (and presumably the OP), especially in light of the fact that I’m not having any issues at all. You noted that both you and the OP are in the UK…maybe it’s an ISP peering issue or something running on the board that is being partially filtered by your ISP? I can think of a few things it COULD be.

That’s certainly a problem, but if it works fine for me and not for you, is the problem the 'dope or something on the client side? I’m not on the same ISP or peered connection as the 'dope (them being in Chicago and me being in New Mexico, for starters), so it’s not that.

Yeah, that’s possible, though again why is it effecting you and presumably the OP while it’s not effecting me? Let me also expand on this at this point…I travel. A LOT. I haven’t been out of the country lately (except to Mexico and one trip to Canada last month), and I’ve had zero issues anywhere I’ve been. I’m home atm (for a change), but I wasn’t having any issues last week in Arizona or California either. Or any issues at work on Friday.

Ok, fair enough. Again, it was what I was responding to there that set me off, not that I don’t think there is a problem.

I’ve tried from two different UK ISPs (Virgin, O2) over the past 2-3 days and have experienced the same issues. And I’ve tried in IE7, Chrome and Firefox on two different laptops - same issues occurring. My iPhone (both over my cell data provider and wirelessly on the same ISP as my computers) doesn’t seem to have the same issues - but then I think it doesn’t get served the ads.

Think the hosts file thing is a good idea until it’s resolved.

Arizona and California are both in the US, if I’m not mistaken. The amount you travel is irrelevant; where you are and where you travel to is relevant. Ad servers do serve ads based on where you are, and I see at least jjimm seems to be in the UK (or at least using UK servers). So, it is entirely possible it is a location based problem. That doesn’t stop it from being an SDMB problem (assuming the users in question really aren’t having problems with any other sites) in the sense that only the SDMB gods can do anything about it.

As it happens the problem is not affecting me either.

I travel outside of the US frequently too (and last time I checked, Canada and Mexico had yet to join the union ;)). Also, the point I was making is that I’m not on the same peer ISP connection as the 'dope, yet it’s not effecting my performance to either the 'dope or with the ads site (just for drill I got on the 'dope at my dad’s house as a guest and also had no issues). I agree that it seems locational, which was why I mentioned it could be connection oriented. AFAIK (and my knowledge on this is limited), the UK doesn’t have a national firewall that would be blocking or otherwise impeding traffic to the ads site, but if modifying the host file for those sites has improved things then that’s what must be happening, whether it’s the ISP’s that are doing it or something else.

At any rate, while I guess it is the 'dopes issue, at some level, it’s not their responsibility to ensure that every ISP in every country in the world provides clear connectivity not only to them but to their ads vendor. I don’t really see how they COULD ensure that, to be honest. Hopefully the host file mod will help those having problems.

I thought it was the length of the WoW thread in The Game Room.

Man, that thing hangs up with me and it only does it THERE!

120 Pages long…

:shrug;

*If your Dope is running slow
And you’ve got no place to go
And your membership means no ad
Don’t get cranky. Instead be glad!

Cook some food. Hey, have some lunch–
It’s later than noon? You can still munch.
Just head off to the grocery store.
Or clean your house. But wait, there’s more!

Throw a toy mouse for your cat.
Open your closet, select a hat.
Wear it as the dog you walk.
Call a friend; catch up and talk.

When my Dope is running slow
I don’t sit there and say, “Woe
Is me,” because although I’m paying
There’s other stuff. Know what I’m saying?*

Yeah, well, anyway, I guess the point is that IME, there are other sites to see and other things to do, if the SDMB is running slowly.

Darn the title of the thread for scanning so well and popping these lines into my head.
