If you’re a Bernie Sanders supporter, are you willing to vote for Hillary Clinton, should she prevail as the ultimate Democratic nominee for President?
Poll coming.

I sort of wonder if anyone’s answer changes depending on what Sanders himself does. Would it change the picture if he runs third party or says, “hell with it, vote for Trump”?
You might as well ask what would happen if it turned out Bernie Sanders was a lizard alien from Vega.
But obviously I would support Clinton, considering broadly speaking she essentially stands for the same things Bernie Sanders does and has a fairly solid platform.
I voted for him in the primary, and I will vote for the Democratic candidate in November.
I was going to vote for Hillary in the Michigan primary, but switched to Sanders because I was upset at her misrepresentation of his vote on the auto bailout. But absolutely positively I would vote for virtually any Democrat over virtually any Republican. Trump must be stopped by any means necessary.
You’re really missing an option. “No because ‘I live in a safe D/R state and it doesn’t matter.’” Or in my case, I’m not voting for Clinton but it doesn’t matter because only 5 EVs are in play and it’s probably a safe D state this election to boot.
Fine. If you must, include in the question, “…and live in a potential battleground state.” Answer accordingly. Thanks.
I’m on record as supporting Hillary, so didn’t vote. I’m curious to see where Dopers fall in the “Bernie or Bust” scale.
Me, too. I’m OK with HRC, but I don’t really like her, and prefer not to vote for her. Since CA is super-duper safe, I can vote 3rd party and still be certain I’m not handing a state to Trump. If I lived in a swing state, I would not hesitate voting for HRC.
BTW, it’s not just Trump. Of all the Republican candidates, the only one I would have even remotely considered would have been Kasich. None of the original bunch, except maybe him, would have gotten my vote. But even if I was waffling between Kasich and HRC, I’d probably go for HRC just to keep the GOP from owning Congress and the Presidency. That’s too risky.
Despite all the heat in the primary, the fact is, I agree with Sanders on about 97% of issues, and with Clinton on about 90%. Those 7% are important issues, and I think they justify my support for Bernie in the primary. In particular, Clinton’s approach to foreign policy is a bit more hawkish than I’m entirely comfortable with, and I do worry that her ties to banks and big business will give them an outsize impact on her administration.
That said, I’m absolutely content, even enthusiastic, about voting for someone I ‘only’ agree with nine times out of ten. The Obama Administration, overall, has had a positive effect on the nation, and Clinton will be more of the same. And that’s okay. Certainly better than any of the traditional GOP candidates, and vastly better than finding whether President Trump starts a nuclear war by accident, or does so on purpose because someone in Kazakhstan made fun of his hair.
I’m not going to vote for her because I don’t like her, her stated policies or her (contradictory) record. I also didn’t like her husband. They’re both basically Republicans.
Hell, I’m not a big fan of Bernie’s stated policies either, but I believe the man is trustworthy and well-intentioned, unlike any other career politician I’ve seen in my life. Maybe he’s just running an effective propaganda campaign, but I liked him before he started running. He’s the guy who spoke out against the NSA, he’s the one who spoke out against the Iraq war, he’s the guy who spoke out against police brutality and institutional racism. Hillary supports all of that, and more.
No, I won’t vote for her. For the first time in my life, I’m not voting for a major party’s candidate in the presidential election. I honestly don’t think I’ll do that again in my life. I’m simply disgusted with both parties the way up until recently I was only disgusted with Republicans.
The Dems have Illinois locked up. There’s nothing I can do to spoil things for Hillary here. But I can take one vote away from her “mandate”, and maybe she’ll seriously consider why she didn’t get as many votes as she’d like (despite winning, as she is almost certain to do), and hopefully be a slightly more effective leader because of it.
I think the second to last answer is actually a faulty premise. Is Bernie Sanders fighting to create a more progressive America, or to prevent Republicans from winning an election? If Clinton wins, it’s an endorsement of her approach and a partial repudiation of Sanders’. If Clinton is a popular President, then it’ll be a very long time before anyone takes a Sanders-type candidate seriously. Primary voters don’t seek to fix what ain’t broken. Clinton could cement the Democratic Party’s status as a Third Way party.
Whereas, a Donald Trump win could screw things up so much that it makes it easy for a leaderless Democratic Party to give a fresh, progressive voice a chance.
This might all be just wishful thinking, but I think Sanders at least in part agrees with me. A Clinton win is not necessarily the best outcome for a progressive. IT’s certainly better over the next four years, but long term could marginalize progressives even more than they are now. The “Growing Democratic majority” isn’t a progressive majority. It’s a “Clinton/Obama Democrat” majority. Progressives are relying on a demographic that looks a heck of a lot like the GOP’s demographic: white people. Younger white people, to be sure, but still white people. Minorities aren’t buying progressivism. They like the Democratic Party the way it is.
Perhaps not, provided such a progressive is only interested in power for its own sake. Otherwise, it’s far, far better than the alternative.
Absolutely. She is not my favorite candidate, but I’m comfortable with her. I trust that she can make it through a meeting with a foreign leader without starting WWIII.
I chose:
“Absolutely I would. Anything else defeats the purpose of everything Bernie has worked for.”
However, I would change it to:
"Absolutely I would. Anything to keep Trump out.
I don’t like Hillary. I don’t like the DNC. But I don’t want to see the world burn just because I’m frustrated. It’s out of necessity.
If you’re in a safe state, seriously, vote for Shamu the whale for all I care. Personally, I’d consider Vermin Supreme.
But if your state has at least a 5% chance of going for Trump (we can quibble on the exact threshold, that’s not very interesting to me honestly), if it’s not completely safe, cast your goddamn vote for Clinton. Nobody gives a crap about protest votes. Protest votes carry zero weight in political circles–or maybe they carry negative weight, as people decide that appealing to the left is impossible and that swinging right is where they’ll find voters willing to play ball.
I’m all about building a robust left in our country. The left in our country is anemic and pitiful. But the work of building a solid left happens the day before and the day after the election: election day is final exam day, not the day to study.
Can somebody, in simple terms, please lay out the argument that Trump is so much worse than Clinton? I don’t like the guy, and I won’t vote for him, but I’m not seeing how he’s the antichrist we have to sacrifice our souls and vote for Clinton to save ourselves from.
I mean, Hillary talks a good game, but she has a record of awfulness. So you can’t just go by what she says. And Trump says a lot of batshit stupid things, but we all know he’s just blowing smoke up his base’s asses, and doesn’t mean a word he says. They’re both liars, but Hillary has a higher body count. And her husband is an albatross.
Again, not pro-Trump here, I just don’t understand why he’s the Hitler everyone points to when they’re trying to drum up support for Clinton. “Sure she’s a lying, warlord shill, but ANYTHING TO STOP TRUMP”. This is what her supporters are telling me. Why does he instill such fear? We lived through Bush, and I’m not seeing how Trump can be any worse.
I just see him as a pathetic little reality show star, and I feel his opponents are giving him far too much credit by comparing him to Hitler or Stalin or whatever. He’s a chump, not a dangerous man. IMO.
It would be with a real bad taste in mouth to vote Hillary ! I going to have a hard putting mark next to her name!
I don’t have time for a longer post right now, I’ll try to come back tomorrow, but I seriously doubt that Hillary supporters were telling you that she’s a lying, warlord shill. Unless you mean that they were Bernie supporters who are only reluctantly supporting Hillary now. There are people who genuinely like Hillary, she’s not ahead in votes because everyone hates her.
I’m a Hillary supporter, and she’s not perfect, but I think she’s done gone work in the past, and has good ideas and plans for the future. And Trump is not Hitler, the country wouldn’t turn into Fury Road if he was elected, but he has said he has a lot of bad plans, and even if he’s rambling and only follows through on a fraction of them, then it will still be bad for the country. And he does have ridiculously thin skin, and it would be inevitable that a lot of relationships with other countries would be drastically hurt because other country leaders or media hurt his ego.
He’s unstable.
He’s expressed admiration for the way Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin have consolidated power through assassination:
Donald Trump praises Kim Jong-un for his firm hand with executed uncle
Trump Says 'Great Honor' to Get Compliments from 'Highly Respected' Putin - ABC News
He thinks more nuclear weapons should be available to more nations:
He thinks the US should simply default on its debts and then “negotiate”:
He’s not just ignorant and irresponsible; he’s actually, quite possibly, certifiably deranged.
