If you've had a mastectomy, what did you wish you had brought to the hospital with you?

This is for a one or two night stay. Mastectomy, not lumpectomy. For cancer. Younger than most. Not traveling far.

What do you think?

Thanks!!!

Had one at 28, but I didn’t find I needed anything more or less than I needed for any other surgery. Toiletries, pjs, a book, etc. I wasn’t sure I was really having a mastectomy at the time though, it was 1979, so things were different. I just went in with my small carry-on.

And it was probably the easiest, least painlful surgery out of any of those I’ve had.

I had abdominal cancer surgery, not a mastectomy, but I wish I’d brought an extension cord for my phone charger. Mr. Helena kept forgetting it and the phone ran down pretty fast in the hospital. There must be a lot of interference.

ATA: Good luck and may you have an uneventful recovery!

Get one of those external charging devices (like this) for your phone/Kindle (Kindle is a wonderful thing to have … hospitals can be boring places and in my experience they don’t run down as fast as phones).

Take whatever you might want to have if you are on a trip.

I haven’t had a mastectomy, but my mom did, and IIRC, she said she was visited by some folks while she was still in the hospital who gave her some info specifically related to what to expect in the aftermath of that surgery and how/where to get some things (bras, prosthetics, support group if she wanted that, etc). YMMV.

I’m sorry. That sucks.

My bilateral was a day surgery, so I don’t have anything to suggest.

PM me, though, if I can be helpful about other breast cancer/mastectomy stuff.

Whenever you go to the hospital these days, even for “day surgery”: phone charging cord. My lumpectomy was supposed to be day surgery but I got so sick from the anesthesia that they kept me overnight.

Even if you don’t normally have a problem with anesthesia, this will likely be a long surgery, so make sure they give you a patch or something for nausea.
