I was watching last week and saw a couple funny animated commercials about an indy filmmaker who is pitching his idea for a movie based on a naked, polish, lesbian sausage factory worker. Really funny - has anyone else seen these?
I love IFC…or well mostly the independent films on it!
I used to watch it, back when it was available to me and I actually watched TV.
Good stuff, especially the Animation Celebration. I’ve also seen a few really good movies I haven’t been able to find elsewhere; like Delicatessen (dark comedy tour de force), Volere Volare, and Schizopolis (a comedy consisting of a string of WTF moments).
At our haus IFC is usually one of the most TiVO’ed channels (excluding Comedy Central and HBO, of course). I’m really hooked on Dinner for Five, but there haven’t been any new episodes for a long time. But, then again, one can never have too much Patricia Clarkson or Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Since IFC has a very limited playlist, I only watch movies rarely.
DF5 started out okay but has become a complete farce. Theme shows (“Daredevil” was by far the worst excuse) don’t work. The 2/16 show had Fran Drescher. Fran Drescher??? WT 1,000,000 Fs. Who did she … to get on the show?
Plus good old John Landis, who can’t tell an actual story since that would mean giving the name of the movie and/or actor. Didn’t someone explain the concept of the show before letting him on?
Can JF, make Carrie Fischer the host and let her rip.
I like both IFC and Sundance Channel.
You get to see some great independent films. The other day I happened to catch a Hungarian documentary made about some old Super8 home movies found in a trunk…sounds dry, but it was actually pretty good.
My only complaint is those channels seem to replay certain films over and over and over. I mean, I am a Gay guy, but if they screen “Kiss Me Guido” one more time, there might be a shoe headed for that tv screen.
I used to watch it before they went digital and the cable company started charging extra for it.
I really liked the interviews conducted by Elvis Mitchell.
I guess they repeat the movies fairly often , but so does HBO and pay channels, and definitely so does USA, TNT, etc. At least IFC is replaying good movies that often don’t get enough exposure.
I personally think DF is a cool concept - it’s like Letterman or Leno - you can’t have legends on the show every time! But I find that even some of the less profile stars have some interesting stories.
P.s.
fond this for anyone that is interested- link to the commercials I mentioned. Good for a laugh
Recently very disappointed in IFC; there’s rarely a movie I want to watch anymore, and the movies I don’t want to watch are repeated ad nauseum. One good thing though: it’s about the only way to see Ripley’s Game in the U.S.
(FWIW, I can’t stand to watch Df5 because I want to kill myself when I do: I had that idea for an arts discussion show–a handful of people around a table, dining and talking about whatever comes up; people put together for interesting resonances or contrasts–but I never did anything about it.)
Oh, and re: Fran Drescher: you obviously haven’t seen Spinal Tap.
Imho, Spinal Tap is one of the best mockumentaries ever created, seconded only to best in show. " The answer is none, none more black." classic line. I have seen the IFC animations- pre-movie ads. But these were more spinal tap-esque: classic wit and honest ironies in these IFC shorties. quoth the producer “Love the dyslexia.”
I love that line - “Look at me I’m weeping openly, and I don’t weep openly.” Also a good one.
They just released a new one on the website - probably the funniest one yet.
“And Roman Polanski is considering the small but pivotal role of the transsexual muffin vendor”
Let us not forget Samurai Saturday.
Only occasionally. The indie films they play that I would want to watch are almost always ones I found on my own by the time they’re on IFC. I used to watch Sundance when it was avalible, but the listings I’ve seen lately don’t make me miss it. I have better luck with STARZ Cinema.
