Okay, this probably isn’t quite as interesting as Stuffy’s rant about Albertson’s (which closed down all of their stores here) but…am I the only person that finds the merry-go-round baggers at the end of the checkout line (think Wal-Mart) ridiculous and annoying? Normally I wouldn’t complain about such a thing, only I had to return to the store tonight after getting home and realizing the milk was missing. The culprit? You guessed it…the merry-go-round bagging system that forces you to spin the thing 20 times before you leave to make sure you’ve got all your groceries.
Please tell me I’m not the only one whose done this/hates this bagging method and save any remarks about me forgetting to check the merry-go-round. I got plenty of that from my wife…
Stuffy’s rant got all of the Albertson stores closed down??
Wow. The POWER of the SDMB strikes again!!

I hate 'em, especially when the bagger starts bagging the groceries of the person behind you and you can’t tell where yours end and someone else’s begin. I’ve only left one bag behind, but I’m still steamed about it.
I just stopped going to the grocery store. I grow all my own food. Every single bit of it. And I live in an apartment. Top that!
I dislike them, too.
My favorite grocery store has switched to them. The cashiers are really good about reminding you to take your stuff, but mistakes do happen. Also, the system basically prevents bagging in anything but plastic. I like to use paper part of the time, and sometimes, I grab a cardboard box and pack everything into that. I find it easier to carry one or two boxes than myriad bags, and the food doesn’t get squished around as much. And it makes it pretty hard for them to NOT put something in a bag. If the item doesn’t need a bag, they have no good place to put it before I get a chance to put it back in the cart.
My grocery does have “bag your own” lanes, which I use, but they are rarely open. Hmm…maybe I’ll complainto the management about that.
All too often, “For your convenience,” really means “For OUR convenience…”
I know they’re convenient for the cashier but I still hate them if I’m making a large purchase. If my purchase fits in one or two bags, the cashier usually puts the bags on top of the carousel.
We moved and now live closer to a Target so now I don’t have to put up with such nonsense.
What the hell is a merry go round bagger?
You have people that bag your groceries?
Wow.
The new ‘charitable’ thing for some grocery stores around here to do is to allow a group do fundraising bagging of groceries. I believe they get a minute percentage of sales for the time they’re doing this. I wouldn’t mind it so much if they knew how to bag groceries!. No, putz, you do NOT put the 7lb bag of cat food on the dozen eggs. Nor is it a good idea when it’s 80F to put one frozen item in each bag rather all in one (or two). Oh, and by the way? While I may be strong, tossing a bunch of canned goods into one bag is a bitch to carry.
I would much rather bag my own.
However, HellMart here now has the little merry go round things. I agree- they suck. As it is, they have 1000 empty bags per spindle so you can barely rotate the thing, but then to try and figure out which ones actually contain your prize purchases? If I have to go to HellMart, LilMiss is responsible for grabbing the bags off as the merry go round as soon as they are filled.
The only place that had them near me was K-Mart, and it went “Tits-up” not long ago.
I hated them too, by the way.
I want to know who thinks it a good idea to bag gallon jugs of milk with regular grocieries, when the container has a handle already. I also can’t stand it when they give me a bag and i only have three things, all weighing less than a pound.
I already carry a huge purse, let me put them in my bag, and be on my merry way!
Every time I’ve tried to carry a gallon of milk in a plastic bag, the bag breaks. So I don’t bother with the bag, though if they insist on putting it in one I will take the bag home since plastic grocery bags are incredibly useful for me.
Picture a lazy Susan with a triangular post coming out of the middle. On each post are 2 plastic bag holders. Total capacity: 6 stacks of bags. The checker puts things in bags, on the lazy susan, and it spins around so you can get your bags. I’m assuming they “upgraded” it b/c before there were only 2 bag racks.
