My latest irritation comes from a know it all poster on another board who condemns cloning mainly because she thinks rich people will clone themselves to live forever and become richer…or that the US gov’t will have entire armies of clones and program them to do as told. She goes on to denounce others by saying they are naive if they don’t see this happening. People that are ignorant and then swear to it! Drives me nuts!
I guess that would be the same US government which is looking at banning all human cloning (I guess they’re going to outsource the creation of this army to the Raelians).
That person is an idiot. This isn’t Terminator; you can’t make clones in plastic molds. You need a carrier, and you may as well just force your citizens to have kids if you want to build a super army.
And we all know how badly that would mess up a country’s economy.
What worries me is that it’s precisely these kind of fears - and let’s face it, it IS the stated intention of the Raelians to use cloning to create “super people” - which will lead to political leaders worldwide making a knee-jerk decision to ban all human cloning rather than imposing a moratorium on reproductive cloning until such time as its safety in humans can be established. Once banned, it’s going to be VERY difficult down the track to persuade governments to unban it.

Have you noticed how conspiracy theorists never seem to get their ideas from reliable news sources such as the BBC?
I kind of liked this report.
What I find very sad is the fact that while scientists themselves are very sceptical (with good reason - a 50% survival to birth rate is unheard of in mammalian cloning), politicians and church leadings are calling for a global banning on ALL human cloning (this would include adult stem cell cloning and the technology we currently use to “grow” skin for skin grafts as well as embryonic stem cell research and reproductive cloning - not all cloning uses the same method as was used to create Dolly and “Eve”).
I’ll be one very pissed off person if a knee-jerk reaction to the Raelian announcement causes my own government to change its current policy in respect of therapeutic cloning.
