One NPR news report this morning was about Al Gore’s choice of Senator Jospehp Leiberman for a running mate. I can’t remember who made the comment but when the point was raised that Leiberman would be the first ever Jewish candidate for VP the reply was to the effect of “Kennedy’s election in '60 showed that Americans don’t care where someone goes to church on Sunday.” <sigh>
More proof that Cecil’s work is not done.

It was another Senator (I Believe) the last name started with a “B”… sigh.
If he had saif “if” instead of “where,” meaning going to religious services on Sunday (as opposed to any other day), he might have been right.
Except for the ‘church’ part.

When you made the above title, did you know what a merkin was? If not, I’ll tell you: it’s a pubic hair wig. In my opinon, I don’t think merkins have any brains, and therefore wouldn’t be ignorant because they can’t learn.
Probably the phrase he was looking for was “ignorant 'Murricans”.
Well, I had to point it out regardless of that point.
I don’t think that “if” would have been the correct fix. I am reasonably sure that an openly atheist candidate would have no chance. The only good solution would be to drop “on Sunday.”
What annoyed me was the headline on the San Francisco Examiner: “Gore chooses Jewish candidate” (or something very close). I had to go to the sub-head to find out if the Jew had a name.
I know what a merkin is, that’s why I put an apostrophe for the missing “A.” I was not aware there was an accepted common spelling.
I just thought the original comment showed ignorance on several levels. Among other things the speaker probably makes no distinction between being ethnically Jewish and practicing Judaism, both of which apply as Lieberman is orthodox. I’m surprised at the cracker headline in the San Francisco Examiner.

SSSKUGGII – Cecil did a column on what, precisely, a “merkin” was, and asked for guesses from the T.M., one of which was that a merkin was someone from merica (har). So you’ll sometimes see people on the board using “merica” or “merkin” in place of America/American. It’s sort of an inside (kind of lame) joke – along the lines of spelling “many” as “manny.” But all true fans of Uncle Cecil are well aware of what a merkin is. 
I apologize for being an apologist. 
You’re right; he just blew it.
