Iiko Puppy-Dog Boy Goes to Philly

I took the faithful companion into Philadelphia today (very briefly) to see if he’ll get used to city life. I’m thinking of moving into illadelph (did I really write that?) from NJ in the spring/summer next year. He sat up in the truck and stuck his nose out the back window on the ride over.

He met a pit bull, a Lucas Terrier, and a chocolate lab. People made a huge fuss over him. I even let some cute punk girl give him a treat (from my stash of dog yummies).

We were only in town for a half-hour, but I plan to keep up the exposure until we’re both used to it. Wish me luck.

Chrome

so where in philly did you take the pup? south street?

Hey Rocking Chair

We went to Olde City:

3rd and Market Street, around about that way. I was curious to find out from other dog owners about where it was cool to let Iiko do his business. I work not too far from Olde City, so that’s where I’m thinking of moving. Are you a South Street denizen?

D’oh moment.
A thousand lashes with a pair of Executive Slacks!

Hey rocking chair

Were you making a Dead Milkmen reference?

If so, then yes, we were on South Street in front of Zipperhead.

Really we weren’t. We’re going to try Philly again on November 17. Let me know if you want to say Hi. I really can’t do too much besides walk around town on account of having Iiko with me.

As I am not a fan of the Dead Milkmen, I may be missing some inside joke here.

OTOH, if you are actually moving to Philly, it's a great town. You've got a whole passel of different groups living in a state of rather high tolerance and friendship. There's the Mutter Museum, The Franklin Institute, The Art Museum (including one of Van Gogh's Sunflowers). And of course, the more Dopers who live in Philly, the greater the chance that I'll get to attend a Philly Dopefest!

Hey Doc

The Dead Milkmen had a song called “Punk Rock Girl” that mentioned South Street and Zipperhead.

Been to the Mutter. It made my soul collapse. I actually work near Olde City, and I’ve lived in Jersey (near Philly) almost my entire life. I am looking forward to good restaurants, Quizzo at Fergie’s, happy hours where I don’t have to drive home, etc.

And of course, the possibility of a Philly Dope Fest.

no, no dead milkmen here… (what have you heard?)

i just figured that a cute punk girl would be found on south. i’m in fairmount. a bit of a hike to south, although i do go down there. old city is a nifty place to live. puppy might like wash. square.

Dogs are big in West Philly to judge from the huge amount of them that live in my apartment building. Penn’s campus is great to walk a dog around should you want a bit of grass.

Good on ya Chrome Spot! Philadelphia has quite a bit going for it, actually. Not bad for a town whose tourism slogan used to be “Philadelphia isn’t as bad as Philadelphians say it is.”

Count me in for a Philadelphia DopeFest. I’m two hours away but can crash with the parental units in the Great Northeast.

<nitpick>
It’s Old City, not Olde City. The signs on the Frankford El platform at Fifth Street are wrong, unless they’ve changed them since 1998. My office used to be in the Lafayette Building at Fifth and Chestnut and I once got chewed out by some snooty historical-society type for referring to Olde City in print with an “e”.

Ha - you still missed the first Philly Dopefest. Right, hedra?

Love Philly - born and raised (now living in San Diego). Anything you need to know, just ask.

Hey Esprix

Pat’s or Jim’s?

See, I know how to start an argument.

Actually, never did a taste-test comparison, so I can’t say. But nobody I ever had make one for me got it wrong. God, these people on the west coast need a clue, though…

And yes, Cheese Whiz is another kind of cheese!

Personally I go to Tony Luc’s for roast pork sandwiches.

Yeah, Verrain! I knew you were a right-thinking person. Tony Luke’s pork sandwiches are the best in the city. A little broccoli rabe, some sharp provolone, oh maaaannnn. . .

Hey, next time I’m in Philadelphia I’ll meet you there for a sammitch, whatchya say? I’ll show you my father’s photo from “Up Close and Personal” on the Wall of Fame.

Zap!

Verrain, I do seem to recall telling you that you ought to seriously consider whipping up a Philly Dopefest. So whaddaya waitin’ for? Somebody needs to cook something up and soon. My miniskirt is hanging in the closet looking all forlorn.

And if such a fest occurs I may have to show up. Has there ever been a sidewalk Dopefest? If there was, Iiko would come with me.

Philly PuppyDope! I think we should do this. I’m available every weekend from Thanksgiving on. Who’s going to step up and organize this? Anyone? Bueller?

With a Tony Luke’s Pork sandiwch wrapped around it is the only way I can eat broccoli rabe.

Well if we were going to have Philly Puppy Dope, we would have to hold it at The White Dog.

And I must admit the thought of Geobabe in her miniskirt is powerful inducement to try and slap one of these things together. Give me a minute to pick this lock on my lab bench shackle and I’ll be right with you.

I’m addicted to Tommy DiNic’s roast pork sandwiches in the Reading Terminal. Where is Tony Luc’s? South Philly?

I KNEW that would work!
