"I'll be in my bunk" -- origin?

I didn’t know the origin (if the Urban Dictionary is correct) of this phrase until the other day. I’m curious how many people know where it was first used, without searching.

I gotta say, I was tickled to hear it, and surprised that it was so recent. I figured it had been around for a long time, and that it originated on the Dope.

Without looking at responses (if there are any), do you know?

I gather it was from

Firefly.

Spoilering since so far I’m close to the top of the page:

I think it’s from Firefly, after Kaylee complains about something sexual (the line about not having had anything “twixt my nethers” comes to mind) and Jayne says, “I’ll be in my bunk.”

firefly baby!

Pretty sure it’s Jayne, from Firefly.

I assume it was from:

Firefly. Jayne says it when he sees that Inara is sleeping with a woman.

Seriously, though, has this phrase gotten to the point that people unaware of its origin use it?

???

Wow…
That IS amusing.

Also, I have to say that having 5 posters reply the same in 14 minutes is rather amusing as well.

Seems so, I like seeing memes being created under my very eyes.

Well, it’s not as if Firefly was all that popular. Because if it was, it (a) wouldn’t have been cancelled and (b) the movie would’ve actually made enough money to warrant a sequel.

The proportion of internet users who are fans of Firefly is an order of magnitude higher than the proportion of the general population who are fans of Firefly. That goes up another order of magnitude of you limit the internet users to Dopers.

Jayne was all kinds of awesome.

And now, I’m slightly depressed because the show isn’t around anymore.

Okay so we know where it’s from, but there are several different recollections of what prompted it. What’s the actual motivation for <that guy> to say it? Was it <character played by J.S.> and her non-twixted nethers or was it <character played by M.B.> caught in a sapphic clutch? Or something altogether different?

Oh, don’t take my guess as gospel. I’ve only seen the series once, and it was a while ago.

:dubious: Really?

Yes. I don’t even know what Firefly is, yet I’ve heard this phrase used repeatedly here.

The clutch, I believe. The other matter was what prompted Cap’n Tightpants to say that he didn’t need to know that.

Here is the moment he first says it.

It’s from “War Stories”:

Book: Oh, my.
Kaylee: Oh, gosh, I - I-I knew she took female clients, I just… They look so glamourous together.
Jayne: [beat] I’ll be in my bunk.

Balance - And Jayne says, “I could hear more…”
