I bought a pickup truck from a local dealer here in Iowa. Its a small used car dealer but I’ve known the salesman I delt with for many years. He’s maybe a little on the slick side but I think I can trust him.
The problem is after 45 days I still don’t have the title to this truck. Legally here in Iowa I must have the truck transfered to my name in 15 days.
I’m told by the dealer that it was an Illinois titled vehicle and its Illinois fault that I don’t have the title because they are just so slow at title transfer.
The truck was sold at auction here in Iowa by a small Illinois car dealer according to the auction folks.
My question.
Is Illinois so archaic that it takes this long to recieve a vehicle title?
Keep in mind that the Iowa dealer had the truck for a while before I bought it.
Do I have any options to light a fire under the Illinois title folks?
OR should I call my attorney?
Did you try calling the state? That would be my first stop.
I have a friend at the state. She takes care of all our stuff personally. It rocks.
I had trouble with an Illinois car title a few years back. When I finally figured out what the trouble was and filled out the correct forms, they informed me that it could take up to 12 weeks to issue the new title to the car. I think that in the end, it actually took 8 weeks.
That being said, I would try calling the IL secretary of states office to make sure that everything is on the up-and-up. For example, I would verify that the dealer who sold you the truck is listed as the current owner (pending processing of the new title documents).
Good luck.
