Transferring a title

Hi everyone,
This isn’t your normal question about car titles, at least I don’t think. A little less than a year ago I bought my very first car. A lot of s–t happened inside that time frame: I was still in the worst depression in my life, changed schools, had medical problems, had more family problems again, etc.

In all the hustle and bustle I never had time to get my title transferred. Since the car I bought didn’t run, and I didn’t have a license at the time so driving my self to the DMV wasn’t an option. I have the title and the transfer portion on the back was filled out and notarized when the actual sale took place. Question is can I still get it transferred 11 months later? I assume I can, but I have no clue. I guess I have to pay the tax on those months or maybe so additional process fee for not getting it transferred within 30 days? The car is so old (1979) that I have no idea if I owe the state(I live in North Carolina) anything especially since it was bought not working.

Sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong area, this is my first post. Any help is greatly appreciated; this car turned my life around and when it is running I would love to get it on the road.

Welcome to the Straight Dope!

Why don’t you call the Motor Vehicle Dept (or whatever NC calls it) and ask them?

Yes you can get it transferred. I work for a title agency in NC. There will be a 15 dollar charge for processing late in addition to the normal title charges. As far as taxes go, that will be determined and billed by your county of residence separately.
