I’m only recently fat and not particularly lazy, but I had a long string of minimum wage jobs and nothing like a “career” for the longest damn time. Thought it was my lot in life. Finally got an MSW and obtained my first professional job at approx 3 times anything I’d ever earned before, plus…JOB SECURITY! Unfortunately the entire agency got fired by the funding sources and I was afraid it was back to minimum wage jobs since no one in social work wanted to hire anyone from where I’d been working. And I did have to take one after awhile [ugh!] when the unemployment insurance ran out.
Then I got a job in computer programming, in which I was never trained. So now I’m making nearly double what I was making as a social worker. But I feel for you. I can’t point to any REAL reason why I’m safely out of the minimum wage ghetto, and if I lose my job I’ll be worrying that that fate awaits me yet again.
