I'm a Level 1 DCI Magic Judge

Pending approval and paperwork and stuff. I took the test and stuff this past Saturday at the prerelease.

This is about as mundane and pointless as it gets, and I expect it to fall off the front page quite quickly, but there’s a small group of Magic players on the boards, and I’m hoping for a better reaction than the one I received from my magic-playing buddies, who mostly just wanted to know if that meant we could sanction our private drafts (no).

Cool.

Good for you! Stay current, now. Magic needs good judges desperately.

I used to be a level 2 DCI judge. In like 1997. I’m pretty sure it’s lapsed by now.

However, I get some cool judge-points-by-association, as I draft (and play racquetball) frequently with the head judge of a recent Pro Tour, and I work with Stephen D’Angelo.
In any case, congrats.

Woo…

I’m a magic noob, with nearly 4 months of experience under my belt! ^^*

whoah, man, I bought my last set of cards… probably near 6th edition…
I think they’re on 10 now… I’m WAY out of date. Back in the day I had some pretty nice decks though. Started around Revised, most of my cards are from that era.

Congratulations!

While it’d be cool to be a judge, it’s too much of a time commitment. I’ll stick to rules lawyering instead.

I tap this thread for 1 point of cool to iamthewalrus(:3=!

oh and

I tap ze goggles…unfortunately…

Cool. I just wish you were Swedish, we desperately need judges.

I’ve been a level 2 since 2003 or so. Not very active these days, though.

I agree, rules lawyering is much easier. I allowed my L1 certification to lapse in '02 because I wasn’t doing anything at the time. Should have kept it up, in retrospect.

It’s possible to get a “Rules Adviser” title, if you want. I haven’t tried because knowing WotC the test probably won’t work using Firefox (that’s what happened when my fiancee tried to take a D&D DM test - after a few questions, it will take your answer, apply it to the wrong question and tell you you got the wrong answer) and I refuse to run IE for any length of time longer than it takes to close the window.

And congrats to the OP.

Grats from the (lapsed) Level III judge community.

I had a good time for the most part as a judge, but be careful not to overcommit yourself to running events to the point where it is no longer fun. Also, try to volunteer for any nearby GPs or pro tours if you have time. The big events are a lot of fun and you will learn an awful lot.

Now, back to trying to break the legacy format ( anyone got a reliable turn 2 kill combo deck?)

D’Angelo’s still around? Buy him a beer for me, wouldja? I miss the crystalkeep updates.

Yes, he is.

He stopped upkeeping the site for a while, but restarted after about a yearlong hiatus. He still keeps the monthly updates going, although he’s not (iirc) a netrep any more.

There’s a small message board over there as well now.

Actually, I took the rules advisor test in Firefox on Linux, even, and it worked fine.

They also have practice rules tests you can take.

Since there was no internet access at the location I took my test, the test had to be printed out before hand. I was amused by the fact that the recent creature type rules update changed enough so that one of the questions on my test was out of date. Unfortunately, I did not get extra points for pointing this out.

I started playing when Unlimited came out. I can’t remember what was out when I quit, but it was a couple years after I would guess.

Thanks for that.

Maybe I can take it then.

The guy who administered my test (1998) pointed out the test hadn’t changed in two years -one question talked about physical differences between Mirage cards and other sets (the colouration of the back was discernibly different if you knew what to look for, and the question was on what you would do if you found someone who’s only Mirage cards were his land base. I got it wrong, which is why I remember it.)

I’ve often considered getting a certification. I’m the default rules source for most of my playgroup, and it would be nice to be able to work the pre-releases and get paid in product. Still haven’t gotten around to it because aside from pre-releases I just don’t see me using it.

Still, it’s cool, and it’s a good sign that you know your stuff if you can pass judge tests. The higher level tests are wicked hard though. I remember someone posting snippets of them on usenet way back and there were some really esoteric things there. I hope you live in a large metropolitan area if you’re looking to move up because finding higher level judges to do the next level test for you can be difficult unless a premiere event comes to town.

Enjoy,
Steven
