I'm A Liberal But...

Well, I scored a 36, which puts me in between Bob Dole and Ronald Reagan.

Are you guys still going to talk to me, or should I just pack up my stuff and quietly depart? :frowning:

I, for one, respect any conservative who is cool with gay marriage.

I’m a libertarian, but . . .

I like to listen to Obama talk. Not because he’s actually saying anything, but just because complete and well-put-together sentences, pronounced correctly, are so refreshing after 8 years of, well, you know.

I’m not looking forward to gun laws being overturned by court decisions. I don’t particularly want to live in the wild west, especially with an ineffectual police force.

(gee, the first libertarian in this thead. I tried to take that quiz but I couldn’t get a score. I guess they didn’t know what to do with me)
Roddy

I lean conservative, but…
I have questions about the way that the death penalty works out in practice.

I support improving funding to the Public Defender’s office.

I oppose any legislated mandatory sentencing laws that tie the judiciary’s hands. Even though I often question the wisdom of individual judges and courts.

I believe that the way to fight illegal immigration is not to focus on closing the borders, but to improve policing, with more substantial penalties for employers who hire such persons. (As well as working with other nations to improve conditions there.)

I do not oppose legalizing marijuana, though I can not say I support it.

I oppose abortion, which I define as I want to see the number of abortions performed in this country drop. To that end: I think that attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade are poor tactics, and doomed to failure, since even if the case is overturned, it will not stop the states from allowing abortion if they so wish; I also believe the best way to prevent abortions from being performed is make sure students get honest, open and complete sex education. And that contraceptives are easily available to the population at large.

I believe that the efforts to close the border with Canada have done nothing to improve security, but only added frustrations and costs to doing business across the border, and have damaged our previously excellent relationship with that nation. FTM, I believe that attempting to close the border with Canada is an impossible task - the natural obstacles along our border with Mexico are infinitely harder to pass, and it’s a shorter border, and we cannot close that one. What makes anyone with a working brain think that the border with Canada, which lacks any sort of natural boundaries for over 2/3 of its length, can be closed?

Whoops, I forgot a big one: I support same sex marriage, and think that the current ban on polyamory is doomed as well.

I’m a liberal…

But I think the media should be cleaned up. There’s too much trash on our airwaves, and I think we’re raising a generation of idiotic, self-absorbed, maladaptive children because of it.

I have no problem limiting abortions to the first trimester, except in cases where the mother’s health is in danger. I know it’s quite possible to not know you’re pregnant in that window of time, but I feel that if you’re having sex, you should be responsible enough to get regular screenings. We should have public service announcements telling women to get checked, if only because good prenatal care during those months is critical.

I also believe there should be incentives offered to low-income mothers who decide to give their babies up for adoption (yes, I know what that sounds like). And I have no problem with a state-funded program devoted to voluntarily sterilizing drug addicts and others who are high-risk (yes, I know what that sounds like too).

I think there should be a three-strikes rule for parental rights. If protective services sees fit to remove your children from your care more than three times, then that’s it. Say bye-bye. Too many fucked-up parents are screwing up their kids.

I don’t think government money should be spent sending people to private colleges. At least not until we fix lower education.

I’m a liberal…

but I drive a big fat gas-guzzling SUV. I don’t live in the mountains, don’t have a family of 8, don’t live in the snow or even go four-wheeling as a hobby. I just like the ride. It helps that I live 3.5 miles from work, keeps my fuel bill more reasonable on a weekly basis and when we do load up and go somewhere, everyone’s comfortable.

but I don’t have a problem with gun rights.

I’m a conservative but find Diogenes’ clear-headedness in certain of his posts make me believe he the most outrageously levelheaded person on this board.

Well, I’m more of a libertarian-leaning conservative, but the Libertarian Party seems to be made up of a bunch of loons, so I guess I’m stuck.

I’m a conservative libertarian, and I’m no cool with marriage of any kind.

 Are you agreeing with me or making fun of me for some reason? I can’t tell :frowning:

I scored a 16, which makes me a left-leaning moderate.

I’m not worried that we might destroy the planet, or the ecology. They’ll both be fine. We might change them enough that we can’t live here anymore, but they’ll do okay.

I’m okay with the idea of nuclear power.

I think market forces should decide the price of gasoline, as higher prices will encourage conservation/innovation when it comes to alternate energy sources.

I’m a conservative, but…

  • I support stem cell research.
  • I support abortion.
  • I don’t think we should do anything about illegal immigration other than cut off any kind of support and heavily persecute people who do try and pass off themselves as citizens.
  • I also oppose all tax deductions and exemptions, save for perhaps the EIC (unlike most benefits, EIC does not cut you off when you start making money, thus encouraging dependency–we’re never going to get rid of welfare, and EIC is as good an alternative as any).

(Note: I’m not so sure that tax deductions are a conservative thing. Their purpose is pretty much social engineering.)

  • I think that the hubbub over the death tax is an engineered campaign to protect children of rich aristocrats. Farmers, etc have recourses.
  • I support drug legalization, with the caveat that no tax dollars be used for rehabilitation.
  • I oppose any and all corporate welfare and bailouts.
  • I’m in favor of having nothing except a flat income tax.
  • I’m for unrestricted free trade; what we trade between states, should be legal between all countries (e.g., must protect patents’ rights). Economic sanctions never made dictators worse off, but they do make citizenry far worse off.

Note here my support for abortion and drug use is more of a “they’ll be less of a burden or competition to me” than a compassionate position. If humans want so badly to screw themselves over, let them do it, just don’t hit me up when they get in trouble.

I’m a conservative but:

I have to admit liberal chicks are better looking and more wild in bed.

I support gay marriage.

The only way God belongs in government is if he personally runs for office.

Medical marijuana is fine with me.

Liberal
I do not care about gun rights. That ship has sailed. They should change the amendment to the right to arm bears. At least an even playing field.
Nuclear power is a big corporation money making idea. The poisonous waste is a problem that is unsolvable. Wind and solar are getting better all the time and deserve financial support.
I am pro gay marriage. They are that way because your god made them that way. They are just people trying to get by.
Legalize drugs. We waste billions and you can get them on any street corner.
Coal power plants should all be cleaned up. Scrubbers should be installed immediately.

I’m a Liberal, “but…”

  • There is no Essence of Satan alloyed into the steel of gun barrels. A decent, competent citizen who can keep and handle a handgun or a SKS responsibly is no threat to me so why should it bother me if he owns one?

  • There is also no Essence of Satan packed into the control rods of a reactor core; IF done right I can deal with nuke powerplants.

  • Welfare (TANF, public housing, food aid, etc.) is a relief measure to help you get back on your feet, get over a rough patch, make up circumstantial shortcomings. It’s not supposed to be a multigenerational lifestyle for the able of body and mind.

  • Meritocracy is good. There’s no problem with someone scoring higher than someone else and being rewarded for it; the deal is that the competition must be fair, and the children must be taught that this does not make either player/student/party superior or inferior persons.

  • I do NOT look forward to a time when I must place my child in a hermetically sealed “black-box”-material capsule before I allow her out into the world. Enough already!

  • I am skeptical of “identity” ideology, having lived surrounded by it and been left totally unimpressed.

  • If your city was founded as a Mission and as such the city seal features a cross, let it stay there. I got no problem with a positive portrayal of the historic role of religion as long as it’s clear that it will not be enforced as policy.

I’m confused.

Maybe it’s that you missed the point of the thread.

The alternative is that you did get the point and you consider an amendment to overturn gun rights, abolishing nuclear power in favor of wind and solar, supporting gay marriage, legalizing drugs, and cleaning up the environment as examples of you at your most conservative.

In which case what are your liberal ideas like?

I have one conservative chick that is so hot. Also she is kind of crazy. Is this a good combination ladies? Yes, she is a Fundie. But, damn she is pretty.

I got a 6 on that test, but I don’t think it was well designed and lot of the questions seemed to be based on right wing sterotypes of what liberals believe. Plus some of the questions asked for preferences where none were necessary. (“Who do you trust more, trial lawyers or doctors?” Why do I have to trust either group more? )

My God. I am starting to agree with** Dio ** We will all die soon. Damn I wanted to see a grand child.
