I'm A Liberal But...

I’m independent but

I’m in favor of people wishing to label themselves liberal or conservative if it gives them comfort.

I’m in favor of a crazy test website which assesses a persons political persuasion and is biased toward the liberal label. Anything left of Reagan is liberal!

I’m in favor of ’ gonzomax’ honesty by not playing the game of this thread by the rules.

I’m in favor of this thread which draws distinction between the McCain platform and the Obama platform(if he hasn’t changed it again today)

I’m an independent and

I oppose the death penalty but will do the injecting if jury says so without qualms.

I oppose late term abortions Late term meaning beyond the morning after. It is mentally healthier to deal with a child than a lifetime of recriminations over could have beens and might of beens!

Child molesters should be shot. Enemy combatants should get three squares and that is all until hostilities are over.

I am against radical environmentalism that stymy capitalism and economic growth and jeopardize the survival and happiness of my children.

I have supported nuclear energy before and after Three Mile Island and Chernobyl and support disposing of nuclear waste in the Marianas trench where plate tectonics will subduct it to the earths mantel.

I support energy independence and energy efficiency and market driven high gas prices and and nuclear energy for the long term, drilling for the mid term and natural gas to fuel cars in the near term. I am against windmills for power as their effect on air circulation has not been modeled and will likely have undesired effects. I support insulated concrete form homes, ground source heat pumps, and flywheels for vehicle energy storage.

I support the fair tax and oppose any regressive tax on companies and investing.

I have no emotional relationship with any source of information. It is either true or not true or opinion or indeterminate.

I support states rights as 5M people are more easily and cost effectively managed than 300M people. I would support splitting California into two states of SOCAL and NOCAL.

I am against welfare other than stopgap and leave it up to the states as how to deal with their unemployment and illegal immigration. Canada, US, and Mexico are all in this together. The federal government should stop and search all immigrants to Canada and Mexico if those countries do not provide adequate screening of immigrants to North America.

There would be no need for school vouchers if the states had public school system that the citizens of the state could tailor to their workforce needs. Some states need Agricultural, some need Engineering, some need arts and entertainment, some need business professionals. All states need choice now because it is so screwed up. I support voucher system until it becomes not screwed up!

I am against unions which use intimidation against me for disposing of my own garbage I am for bailing out companies whose unions made it impossible for the company to compete. And am for mandatory retraining to receive unemployment when whole industries are eliminated due to changes in technology. Old dogs can learn new tricks.

Everybody should carry a side arm and be required to perform two years of state national guard service or merchant marine service or conservation service or cow milking service. Some service that requires discipline and placing others above self.

A better and more revealing test is here http://www.personalitytest.net/quizzes/quiz2/index.htm I just scored 26.
At age 25 , I scored 10. I think that voting should be restricted by the score on an emotional test of this type.
.

I’m a liberal, but honestly I’m afraid when Obama says he’ll pull out of Iraq unconditionally. Whatever you think of the motives and execution in Iraq up until this point (which are uniformly awful thanks to Bush and Co), I really think now would be a bad time to pull out (and no, I don’t really know when would be good). As bad we’ve made things, there are Iraqis who are terrified at the thought of us leaving now. I loathe GWB and think he’s a deplorable idiot, but if long-term stability in Iraq makes him look like the love child of Churchill and Einstein, I can live with that. Peace before politics.

What does being independent have to do with being liberal or conservative? You can be independent of the political parties, but unless you are totally apolitical, your beliefs are going to fall more on one side or the other. No test or standard is perfect, but come on, nobody is that moderate as to straddle the fence perfectly.

I’m a Liberal

But…
I HATE Hate Crimes Legislation. Prosecute people for their actions, not their thoughts.

I’m pro-nuke power. We’ll need it to power all these electric cars.

I’m for reasonable Gun Control, I thought DC had taken things too far.

independent - not dependent: as a (1):not subject to control by others (2):not looking to others for one’s opinions or for guidance in conduct

Accepting a label of liberal or conservative gives power to the person labeling to put one in a pigeon hole. And if you accept being placed in a pigeon hole then one must also accept the restrictions the pigeon hole places on you. Labels are also emotional in there content. An independent must be unemotional else he be controlled by them. There is only truths, not truths, opinion or indeterminate all of which must be factored to determine the best candidate regardless of the labels. One must be independent in thought.

It sure seems to me that the majority of posters to this thread say they are liberal but they each listed the opposite stanch on the most contentious of the issues confronting the US during this election cycle. Being grouped and labeled gives one a certain sense of security and those labels are perceived to be less denigrating then being labeled young and old. One must be independent of opinion.

Reagan won a landslide not because he believed in conservative position, he won because he knew his position of empowering individual Americans was true and the other position of controlling Americans was false. One must be independent of beliefs.

For the 18 to 29 year old demographic, the Internet generation, this election cycle has forced you to make a decision independently and separate from those that came before as you have been blessed with information like no other generation. But this information is tainted by falsehoods, opinion, and indeterminate questions and you are besieged relentlessly. And after it is all said and done you will still feel that the future is unpredictable to 6 billion decimal places because that is what is true. One must be independent of uncertainty.

This Independence day marks the American anniversary of Freedom of thought, Freedom of opinion, Freedom of beliefs, and Freedom of uncertainty.

It could also mark your independence from labels, emotions, party loyalties and candidate bull shit. Take a tally of your stances on issues and look closely at each candidates demonstrated track record on those issues and vote with your head. And tell everyone you are voting your head and that you are what you are, an independent.

I’m a libertarian but I think governmental regulation is necessary to protect the environment (there isn’t enough of an incentive for companies to do it on their own).

Wow, way to miss the point by posting a big bunch of bullshit.

Unfortunately, you’re now derailing a really interesting thread. You’ve taken your fair share of opportunities to lay out your political views in Great Debates and you’re welcome to continue doing so, like everyone else. If you don’t feel like playing by the rules of this thread, start your own. But this isn’t the thread (or the forum) for debating.

It’s against board policy to misattribute quotes in boxes this way. Please don’t do this again.

How is what I did any different than someone who quotes a post and types “snip” instead of the post?

Someone who types “<snip>” makes it clear they’re editing someone else’s words, while you attributed something to focusonz that he didn’t actually say. I know it’s an obvious parody, but just for consistency’s sake it’s something we’d prefer people didn’t do.

So basically, what you’re saying is if I had typed “<blah blah blah>” (clearly indicating a parody of “<snip>”) I would have been in the clear?

I am a Liberal - a card carrying, yellow-dog, commie-pinko-flower-loving-peace queer, liberal.

I also am not looking forward to freezing in the dark. Power up the nukes.

I am oppossed to abortions past a certain point of development - but I have no idea where that certain point is.

I can appreciate that this country rests on the ideas, labor, and sweat of immigrants; however, I would very much appreciate it if you would learn English.

I have absolutely no interest in confiscating guns or otherwise banning most forms of firearms.

I’d have to ask if there’s any “official” preference on that if you’re really interested. Ideally, the policy is that people shouldn’t use the quote boxes if they’re not really quoting someone, at least in part. Just to be clear, by the way, I was making a note and not a formal warning.

Understood. You can ask if you want, but it’s not something I’m dying to know. <snip> usually does the trick and I’m sure it will in the future.

I don’t see how religion can be separated from culture, especially in societies like the US and the Middle East where its influence is so pervasive. And, at least outside the US, Christianity has more or less mended its ways, bar the odd molestation scandal: priests don’t rail at people from the pulpit to go out and kill some Jews and Muslims any more.

Quote of the day! Can I get that on a T-shirt?

JRB

I am a hard libertarian, but…

I find many of my fellow Ron Paul supporters extremely obnoxious or downright LaRouchie-like nuts. (Ditto for a somewhat smaller proportion of Obamaites)

I think the death penalty is fine as long as the standard of evidence is extremely high, and will not mind if it is applied to some felonies besides murder.

I feel that prisons are cruel and should be abolished in favor of non-mutilating corporal punishment.

I believe that a K-12 public education should be provided, though more along the French or South Korean model (emphasis on vocational training or specific college preparation).

WRT gay marriage, couples (or any number of consenting adults) should have equal standing in terms of legal contracts regardless of their gender, and whether they call it holy matrimony, Unamerican Subversion of the Straight Way of Life, or gotothekitchenandbakemeapieage in private should be utterly immaterial to the state.

WRT one of the first posts in this thread, I want legalized pot primarily because of pain issues. Principle is fucking moot when you’re nonfunctional and whimpering.

Talk to some people this year, and they’ll tell you He is!

This, emphatically.

Does it really matter *why * you tied someone to a fence and beat them to death, or dragged them behind your pickup for several miles?
