I'm a-movin' to Killeen...

My all-too-long involuntary vacation is drawing to a close. This morning I got the call from the City of Killeen that they want me to come and help make their GIS dreams into reality. Immediately, as it turns out…I have a physical tomorrow and I start Monday. And sometime in here, I have to actually move to the city…I’m 100-ish miles away, camped out at chez mes parents south of Austin.

So, anyone with any pointers, info, live-here-but-not-here type data, or random trivia regardng my new adventure in geography, please feel free to chime in.

I miss Austin already…

I have some freinds in Killeen. Nice place.

Military towns always seem to have a lot of pawn shops. I used to buy pawned cameras in Killeen and resale them in Houston. Decent profit margin.

I used to hear the artillary from Ft. Hood at night 45 miles away. Dems some big guns.

I have friends there.

The guy that is the technical director at the theater there (Vive’ Les Artes) is married to my college roommate (they’re old people, like me) and can always use some help with stuff. Good way to meet people, and life is more pleasant if you know people from places other than work.

There are no bars or liquor stores in Killeen. That is why Harker Heights exists. They have some nicer apartments in HH, population of which is less than majority military, therefore not as much turnover. As to more info on apartments, i’ll ask Laurel, and our college friend, Michelle, and get back to you. (Michelle lives out in the country, and teaches in Copperas Cove. Laurel and her husband Stuart live in a nice area near the lake north of Harker Heights.)

As a rule of thumb, apartments will be filled with military families wherever you look. The housing market gets weird, depending on what the Army does. And when a major number of people are being shipped out on a regular basis, there can be sub-leases available of a few months, so you can get to know the area before you make a committment to a year long lease. Avoid duplexes/fourplexes unless you really enjoy small children…

Interesting place, Killeen.
