If I simply delete all the cookies in my temp file, so what? Sites like SD would simply reload another cookie the next time I visited, right?
What kind of bad things could happen if I cleaned out all my cookies?
(By the way…I already used the search feature, and I found out what the benefits or having cokkies are. I want to know what the drawbacks would be, if any, if I “cleaned house” and started fresh.)
If this server relies on your cookie to tell it how many posts you have, your glorious 1000+ post count might drop to zero. Then how cool would you be?
Throw them away, but don’t expect auto-login to work here, or anywhere else. Same with sites you’ve registered at, you’ll have to do that all over again unless you remember every username and password. Other than that, the elimination of your post counter is BS, all that info is here with your profile. I’ve logged in with another browser and my info is still here.
They don’t take up much space, so unless you are really strapped for hard drive room, I wouldn’t bother.
As far as auto log-on, save all your user names and passwords on note pad and put them in your document folder on your desktop, sooner or later you’ll be glad you did.
If you do a lot of shopping on the net like I do, that “one click shopping” beats the hell out of having to type in your name, address and credit card number every time you want to order something, so the cookies are handy.
There are programs that will allow you to accept some cookies and decline others automatically. The one I use is CookiePal. It can be found at http://www.kburra.com.
I also use a program called WindowWasher to delete all the cookies that I decide to accept on a temporary basis. It also kills a lot of crap Windows wants to keep on my hard drive that I don’t want it to keep. You can find it at http://www.webroot.com
These aren’t the only programs of this type available, just the ones I like and use.
