Back in September the A/C in my van started to go (1995 Nissan Quest, 160K miles). Assuming it was going to be an expensive problem to fix and not having any money I just let it go and suffered with the heat. I figured I could tough it out for the winter since it’s not too terribly warm here for a month or so.
Then I let my daughter borrow my van and she got caught in this horrendous traffic jam on I-4. My car overheated and from that experience we came to learn that the radiator fan motor was siezed and that’s why the car overheated (and also why the a/c wasn’t working). My brother put in a new fan assembly but the fan was not happy having issues. No, the fan works sometimes but not all the time and not when you really need it. He can’t figure it out. I still have no a/c and my car still over heats. I still have no money to fix it having shelled out my life savings ($189) for the fan assembly.
Here I am in May facing a week of temperatures in the 90s and by chance I mention my car woes to a co-worker. He has a friend who’s opened a new shop and won’t charge me a whole bunch so I make an appointment and drop off my van. I recently sold some furniture so I’ve got a little extra cash and I think maybe it won’t be too terribly expensive.
He calls a couple of hours later and say he’s all done. Fuse and melted wire replaced. Fan assembly plugged in (correctly this time :smack: ) And my a/c is colder than a witch’s tit. I mean cold. Total cost $70.
Glacial, icy, cool as a cucumber,
It’s gonna be a long hot summer in Florida but I’ve got some wicked a/c. Life is good.
Congrats! I know what a relief that can be, being from mean ole Florida myself!
All I’ve ever driven has been broke-down Chevy’s. My first car, 1977 Chevy Caprice Classic, had working a/c when I bought it for $500 back in 96’.
I drove that one into the ground and then my SO got a great deal from his boss and I bought the old work vehicle, 86’ Chevy Blazer. This one had none of the luxuries I was accustomed to in my old Caprice: no a/c, no power locks, no power windows, and no radio.
Luckily my boss took pity on me and had my a/c fixed by the company, making it a company car again. It took five trips to the station and about $1700.
Did I mention I love my boss?
It took five trips because I swear the mechanic was putting an ice cube in there and it would melt overnight.
I pick up the truck; Ice cold a/c.
Get in truck next day: Hello, when did Satan move into my car vents?
The fifth trip got it straightened out, thank Og!
Good thing, too, cause the mechanic died after that.
My truck seems to have a thing about that.
Man I bought it from: Had a heart attack and died while frying an egg.
First mechanic: Committed suicide.
Second Mechanic: Died of illness
Third Mechanic: I dunno. All I got told is that “Willie is dead”.
I can’t tell you how jealous I am of you right now. When my husband and I got back from our honeymoon two weeks ago, the air conditioner in our condo was just starting to go. It stopped working last week. Just in time for it to reach 90 or so degrees outside. And to make matters worse, our fridge is starting to go, too. I haven’t been able to get much work done because I work at home, and it’s stifling hot here at my computer. And it’s distracting to work with sweat sealing your clothing to your backside.
Fortunately, the A/C guy is coming today to give us a quote. I’d go outside to my car, but the A/C there only works if you’re going really fast. I live in the city with lots of stoplights. :smack:
The upside of all of this? I’ve been gobbling fruit and vegetables like crazy lately because I don’t want them to go bad, and you can make some yummy cold dishes out of them. So at least I’ve been eating healthier.
