So…Mick’s people planned ahead and booked a suite because they knew he would be touring. Was this summit called at the last moment or did Mr. Cheney forget to book the rooms early?
Lighten up, Humpy. “Our” president is an accomplished international buffoon. It would be wrong to not sneer at him with the same venom as he demonstrates to us every day. He doesn’t give a shit about his constituency. oubly so for those of us without means or connections. Him having to get behind someone of Mick’s breeding because his own team dropped the ball is only the beginning of the torment he deserves for the remainder of this life. He’ll be lucky if his torments are limited to humiliations such as this.
Bush is a walking bullseye these days. He should be booking rooms at military bases for his own security anyway.
I disagree. I think the news article made a mountain out of a mole hill. I bet the White House doesn’t consider it that big a deal. I don’t see where what Mick Jagger did was disrespectful.
The same barbarians that control the white house, the house and senate, and most governorships? Gloating liberals are not a majority.
Personally, I respect the office of the President of the United States, which is why I like people pissing on Bush. I don’t think he gives the office the respect it deserves.
But not Jagger’s. And not Austria’s. You seem quite confused as to who you’re condemning here - them, or those who fail to join your stone-the-blasphemers crusade.
Who, if you’ll come to think of it, has done and will continue to do far more good for the world than the government employee you refer to. He doubtlessly has higher approval ratings, too.
Let’s keep in mind that the “he” in question is not Jagger, but a member of his staff. A rather minor point, but whatever Jagger’s response was is mere speculation (although he probably wasn’t a sweetheart about it, I’ll admit).
Wow … not getting the President’s first-choice hotel is THAT disruptive to security? Our Secret Service must be full of incompetent boobs. I would think that the organizers of your average elementary-school field trip could put together a backup plan without being thrown into disarray.
Now DerTrihs, I know you’re irritated by the asinine OP, but that’s no reason to be innaccurate. The motto of the SDMB is fighting ignorance, after all- and therefore, posting an incorrect fact in your post is disappointing. While most of it was fine, I take issue where you said that:
Bush was elected once. Putting inverted commas around it was a good start, given the nature of the elections, but I think we have to be a little more precise.
Oh, and to the moron who started this post? Jagger’s refusal was a shining example of the principles that America supposedly stands for, and Bush’s request was, to begin with, a piece of arrogant dickheadery (“Oh I know you booked these rooms well in advance of me, and need the area for the work your doing, but I’m the President on an expensive foreign junket, so fuck off.”) Not only was Jagger entitled to tell the Bush to shove it up his arse (Bush’s arse, not Jagger’s), his doing so was both fully deserved given Bush’s record of ill manners and entirely appropriate given that they enjoy equal standing in Austria. I agree that the posters who revelled in this action were out of line: they should have been still more exuberant, given how rarely Bush is reminded he doesn’t live at the centre of the Universe.
Heh. While I was writing this post, Sympathy for the Devil came up on my shuffle! Now there’s an appropriate soundtrack.
Uh, excuse me, it’s been brought to my attention that a few bad apples are smoking marijuana. Uh, I’ve got news for you, my friend: marijuana’s illegal, not cool!

You always know what’s best…
Good point. Say what you will about him, some people like his music, and last heard he wasn’t responsible for killing tens of thousands. Nor does Jagger have people snatched off the street and tortured ( for liking the Beatles better, I suppose ).
They’re too close to Bush’s Failure Aura; of course they screw up !
I personally am appalled at the thought of the President and his entourage forced to stay at the Vienna Motel 6, not getting enough clean towels and having the ice machine break down.
“I’d like to leave a wakeup call for 6 tomorrow morning. That’s Mr. Bush in room 410. George Bush. B-U-S-H.”
We should also demand an accounting of any in-room movies. The Republican National Committee has to pay for porno flicks.
Hey, there’s no harm in asking, so I’m not prepared to bash the Prez for making the request. There’s also no requirement for Mick to agree, so there’s no reason to bash him for that either.
That’s the whole point of reservations, you make one, and nobody else can have the room, even if they’re… The President.
Provided you’re Mick Jagger. I bet if I reserved that room, the hotel would have let me know that the president needed it and that would have been that.
I’m not ashamed of either Jagger or Bush in this overblown fishwrap story. After reading the story, it was THEIR support staff that engaged in this. FAWK, Bush was tumbling dice when his staff was trying to make the reservations.
Please explain what was arrogant about his refusal, and how he could have refused in a less arrogant way. I read the other thread, and the article it links to, and I see nothing arrogant about it, unless you consider the refusal itself to be arrogant. In which case, then you do indeed seem to be arguing that he has some right to the room over private citizens who reserved the room beforehand.
