As some of you may have seen, I’m back from vacation. We had a great time in England and Ireland. The trip was topped off by our attendance at the Opening Ceremonies of the Dublin Dopefest. I told Globe-trotter that I was thinking of starting a Preliminary Report thread for the gathering, but they have been posting all along so I’ll pass on that.
I won’t bore you guys with the details of my trip. That would be like bringing out the slide projector. But I do have a couple of random comments based on my trip abroad:
They have a game show over there that we need to import. It’s called “The Weakest Link” and it’s kind of a cross between “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” and “Survivor”. Basically, a team of eight people answer questions for money. At the end of each round, the team votes to get rid of the weakest link. The lady host of this show is pure evil.
In the Dublin airport we wanted to buy some gum to help with the ear-popping thing. We found out that chewing gum has been banned. The lady who told us this didn’t remember the reason for this. Does anyone out there know?
Hey micilin – did you ever figure out who I reminded you of?
Sounds good to me tater, provided I can find my brain by then.
Tripler - “Greed” is the closest thing we have in this country to “The Weakest Link”, but it’s not the same. I’ve only seen a little of “Greed” but from what I can tell, you have the option of turning on your teammates to get more money while in WL it is required. In Greed there is a good chance the team will split the money. In WL only one person ever goes home a winner. A subtle difference that makes “The Weakest Link” nastier.
The weakest link is a great game show. Ann Robinson ( the host) makes it. She is so off hand with them it’s hilarious.
The voting can sometimes be very cruel with the strongest link being voted off for tactical reasons of just that some people have not being following who’s answering well. It’s the game show equivalent of Speed.
Ann Robinson can come across as a total sadist. The best part of the show is the mini-interview with the person who has just been voted off. If they were rubbish, then it’s “ah well, I suppose I wasn’t good enough” and so on. But if they were good, and they were gotten rid of because they were a threat of winning, they are so bitter it is extremely funny!.
Hey Paul, how’s things back in the New World? It was great to meet you and your lovely wife! As Tracy said already, she has the stroopwafels because she can send them for almost nuttin’, being American and all. See, Americans that work in Europe are shielded from our Evil High Postage and Fuel Prices by means of some sort of weird Murriken Subsidy System, I suppose.
Free lodging, petrol at 25% of the average pump price, and Tracy STILL wonders why the Germans hate her and her compatriots
Anyway, a great time was had by all - and I fully second the MicroManiacs suggestion. Man, what a hilarious game, especially whilst intoxicated!
The next meeting could be DopetoberFest, but Yojimbo and I also contemplated a Tennessee White Trash Dope ‘em Up with shootin’ ‘n Jack Daniels ’ wrasslin’ 'n monster trucks 'n shit
Either way, I’m sure I’ll meet some of you, if not all of you, and hopefully MORE of you, in the near if not distant future.
Yojimbo, try and make it to A’dam next month. I’ll return the courtesy of loading you up with great beers, Belgian as they may be
Perhaps this is where I add that yojimbo talked about MicroManiacs in ANOTHER thread about DubDope.
Sheeeit, my brain seems to work poorly ever since it is deprived of Guinness. Lads, is this a normal phenomenon? Should I just go out and buy me a quick pint?
Thanks guys. I had missed the name of the host of the show and now I know. She’s great. My favorite part is when someone gets voted off. She’ll say something like “So Bob. You are the weakest link. Goodbye.” No pleasantries like “It was great having you on the show.” Just “Goodbye”.
Yikes. Looks like a simulpost. Either that or I’m more screwed up than I had thought. Thanks in advance for the stroops Coldie. Tracy already has my address. We both had a great time Thursday night and if I can get access to a functional scanner, I’ll be posting pictures.
