I'M BROKE! WILL WORK FOR FOOD! (food stamps/welfare questions)

So I live in NYC, work at least 6 days a week, and barely make enough to pay rent (let alone food and my student loans). If I wanted to get food stamps and welfare assistance, what are the options and how poor do I need to be?

I know that there’s a site to fill out some forms and find out whether or not I’m eligible for food stamps, but what about other programs? I’m a single white male with upper middle class parents. That probably makes me ineligible for most programs, right?

And what about food stamps in general? How poor do you need to be to get food stamps in other parts of the world?

And how does my city’s welfare program compare to LA? Ottawa? London? Paris? Tokyo? Beijing? etc…

Also general welfare info welcome.

A Dope thread from last year:

Several Dopers who are / were receiving assistance discuss their states’ requirements. I don’t know if any of them were from NY.

Google your city + food stamps do I qualify?. That’s what I do when I get curious. I never qualify–in Indiana, at least, if you have any assets (maybe over 2K? not sure) you’re not eligible.
See if there is a local Community Action Project–they often have a comprehensive list of services, food banks, etc. There may be places you can get groceries without having to submit proof of income. Again, I’m only speaking from my experiences with my local support systems.
Should you have to move to avoid starvation, I recommend Bloomington, Indiana. We have great services here. Good luck.

Thanks alot! I found the first link right away but had trouble finding anything like the second you provided. That stinks… I’m not even close to broke enough to qualify but I still can’t make rent! :smack:

Great thread! Thanks for the link!
