I fell at work Wednesday. Well Just outside actually so I probably won’t be getting workman’s comp. I broke every toe *inside *my left foot. My big toe was obliterated (their word) and I’ll have surgery on Tuesday to reconstruct and fuse the joint. Then 6-12 weeks of no weight on the foot. Hard to do when you’re the size of a Buick. This is a hell of a way to get out of going to my aunt’s christmas party.
And what’s more?! I screwed up my left wrist so bad that I’ll probably have to have surgery on it too. So I can’t use a wheelchair by my self and you can’t rent an electric. And insurance won’t pay for one unless I need it permanently. I don’t want it to be permanent, thanks. My house is not handicap accessible, and DeHusband is not really capable of having to do everything for me. So it looks like I’m going to be stuck in the hospital or in a nursing home for a while.
I hate to be whiny, but could y’all please send me every heaing thought or prayer you can come up with? And please remember DeHusband as he tries to get the house clean before my mother shows up!!
I fell at work a year ago last October and broke my right foot. More than a year later, it sometimes still hurts! Take care of yourself and don’t overdo it. It’s going to take a long, loooooooong time to heal.
Jeeeez…what the hell did you fall off of! Sorry for your woes. I suggest trying some alternate sources to find that wheelchair. Maybe your community has an elder support thingy that has a pool of items (maybe donated after someone dies), maybe Craigslist, something like that. Total immobility will make you nuts. Good luck with the surgeries and recovery.
I am definitely thinking of you, DeVena and sending healing thoughts your way. It was just about 4 years ago, in Dec. 2004, that I stepped in a hole just outside of my work building and broke my 5th metatarsal (the outside bone) in my left foot. I was fairly immobile for about 6 weeks, and that foot still aches from time to time. Fortunately it was on work (govt.) property and I did get workman’s comp. That’s small consolation, though, when you’re hurting and can’t move very well or at all. {{{{{{DeVena}}}}}}
I broke a hip at work a few years back. The worst part was not being able to navigate stairs for three months. Our full bath is upstairs. I was three months without a shower. Three months of bathing at the kitchen sink. I reeked.
But do check with someone to see if workers comp will cover you. I found this at the Alabama WC website:
INJURIES BY AN ACCIDENT ARISING OUT OF AND IN THE COURSE OF THE EMPLOYMENT. Without otherwise affecting either the meaning or interpretation of the clause, the clause does not cover workers except while engaged in or about the premises where their services are being performed or where their service requires their presence as a part of service at the time of the accident and during the hours of service as workers.
(Bolding mine.)
It’s worth a call to a local attorney who handles workers comp, or to your HR department. Workers comp will pay all your medical costs, drugs, necessary equipment like wheelchairs, therapy, etc., and you’ll be paid a portion of your wages while you’re healing.
And there’s a deadline for reporting an injury, so hop to it!
I stepped off the sidewalk just outside the back door. The side walk tilts there and I just stepped wrong. Ass over tea kettle - fall down, go boom.
I work for State government so if I don’t get Workman’s comp I can’t sue. I’ll try arbitration through my"union". I’m having to apply for catastrophic leave so people can donate their excess leave to me. 8 weeks is a very long time.
DaBrother and his girlfriend just came over and cleaned my kitchen. Which was just insanely sweet of them. Thank you all for being so caring. I really do appreciate it.
“Hop”?! Again with the jokes! Don’t worry, I’m through the first round now I just have lots and lots of paperwork to fill out. DeHusband already asked for the footage from the building’s security cameras, but the manager said they couldn’t see anything on it. 3 cameras in that area (25 cameras total) and they couldn’t see the fat lady in the bright violet dress fall down? Yeah, right. But anyway, it can’t hurt to try.
I was lucky. I fell inside the building, on a mat that others had tripped on. Double lucky that my boss is a nurse and knew what to do. Triple lucky that the hospital was only a few blocks away. Yep, glass half full.
Nobody saw me fall, but if someone had suggested that my hip was already broken when I went to work, I’d have broken something else from the laughing.
I imagine the same would be true of five crushed toes.
SEE A WORKERS COMP ATTORNEY NOW. I don’t know about your state, but in my state Workers Comp covers you when you are going to work or going home from work. You don’t have to be on your employer’s property.
