Do they fly the fuckin’ flag at full staff anymore? I thought the rules for flying the flag at half staff were meant to make this a meaningful gesture. Anymore, I can’t even figure out WHY the damn things are at half staff!
I’m not a nationalist or even a patriot; I don’t really even care if they fly the star and stripes. But as long as it’s up there, maybe it could be all the way up… Instead we get the nation wide flaccid flag treatment.
I’ve been cogitating that myself, lately. Every time I drive past a flag, it seems like it’s at half-mast. The latest I understand - four Mounties killed in the line of duty is flag-lowering worthy. The rest - I’m not too sure what “crises” precipitated the lowered flag.
I’ve got a full view of my state’s capitol building and I’ve been thinking the exact same thing nowadays. It’s gotten to the point where I look at the flags and think “Hunh, halfmast. I wonder if someone lost a shoe.”
