My past in a nutshell: I went to college as a computer science major in the early '80s. I didn’t finish; I dropped out to work full time to support my family.
Next week I am entering a class at the local vo-tech. The course is training leading up to the actual test for A+ certification. I’m in the class to finally have something that shows I have some computer knowledge, so that I can find a job (or create one.)
I’m asking for any advice about how to prepare for the course, and once I finsh the course, what do I do next? Where should I begin to look for a job?
Congradulations — A+ Certification is for repairing and or building computers. If I remember right it is mostly hardware with some emphasis on the software that goes with configuring a computer. It really isn’t that hard but experience would be the best preparation. You will learn all about motherboards, disk drives,Bus speeds, memory types,AGP, IDE ,SATA and SCSI connections. Have you built and or repaired computers in the past? You will probably need more experience on the software side in order to be more qualified for employment. Just the knowledge of hardware doesn’t quite seem to be in demand. It also is best to have a good knowledge of networking.
