The robotic, advisor-and-poll driven, everything-is-a-talking-point politicians have completely turned off the voters. The other candidates, Republican and Democrat, have so deeply incorporated these robotic tactics that they could not act natural if their lives depended on it. Trump looks natural and sounds natural. He, very calculatingly, KNOWS how to do it. No other politician seems to. Sanders tries, but he is a pale shadow.

Trump’s birtherism was reportedly one of the reasons Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake found it distasteful that the Maricopa County Republicans were hosting Saturday’s rally. When Flake appealed to the party this week to reconsider its involvement, the county chairmain responded that he was “thrilled” Trump was coming and scolded Flake for violating the Reagan rule that “thou shall not speak ill of any other Republican.”

And it is not only in the Political world, what gave me hope for the future was seeing many SDMB conservatives repudiating Trump for this and other reasons. Like making it less likely that the Republicans will use the Oval Office any time soon.

Unfortunately, their base doesn’t care about their models and their projections; they are convinced that immigrants are the source of all their troubles. And that’s a huge problem. A recent analysis by Latino Decisions shows that Republicans need to get at least 47 percent of the Latino vote in order to win in 2016. (For reference, Mitt Romney won 23 percent.)

I’m going to take a wild guess that Donald Trump and the cowardly clown car that’s chasing him have just made achieving that 47 percent figure impossible. It’s very hard to imagine that they can put this nativist genie back in the bottle. Even Jeb Bush, who is married to a Mexican American, was out on the campaign trail talking about “anchor babies” yesterday. All GOP candidates are getting drawn into the vortex, whether they want to or not. And some of them are just diving in had first:

In case it wasn’t clear, Dr Ben Carson, the man who is coming in second in many GOP presidential polls, is suggesting that the government use armed drones to kill undocumented immigrants. Pete Wilson was a bleeding heart liberal by comparison.

Wilson’s California Republicans are now a rump party of angry, white Tea Partyers and a handful professional operatives. It’s a very sad motley group compared to the political juggernaut that produced Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

There used to be an old saying “As California goes, so goes the nation” meaning that California was the modern, forward thinking laboratory of democracy which started the trends that everyone else would soon follow. If that holds true in this case of this Latino bashing, the Republicans are in for a long road back from the debacle of 2016.

That it is really you and other Trunp supporters the ones that do not notice that that saying about “Be careful what you wish for” applies very well to you and your ilk that is wilfully ignoring what that extreme nativism will lead to.

In the first place I don’t think Trump meant to attack Klum so much as to stealth brag about the beauty of the women he’s always dated. It’s also possible that Klum slighted him at some point in the past and he saw an opportunity to get back at her and took it.

But be that as it may, men and women make judgements as to each other’s attractiveness. It happens, big deal.

It’s bullying, because, in order to boast about his sexual success, Trump insulted a woman who was just minding her own business. He couldn’t just talk about all the beautiful women he’s dated; he had to try and pump up his desirability by insulting someone else.

The fact that the insult involved the common misogynistic trope of slamming her for her age is just the cherry on the top of his pathological megalomania.

Why do I suspect that if Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton were to make some comment along the lines of how they didn’t think Brad Pitt was all that anymore we wouldn’t be hearing a word about it from you guys?

Bill Clinton knew how to carry it off, yes. He’s the only one, really. Not Reagan - he was as wooden/robotic/formulaic as others. Definitely not Bush - either of them. Carter was not natural. I have heard Ford/Johnson/Kennedy speeches, no, they were maybe “presidential” but definitely not natural. The others are before my time, but I very much doubt they were natural sounding.

Donald Trump’s supporters are passionate, but there aren’t that many of them.

Despite what you may have read elsewhere — or heard from the man himself — Donald Trump is not all that popular with Republican voters. Sure, he’s in first place in many polls. But Trump is near the back of the pack by another important measure.

In the chart below, I’ve taken an average of favorability ratings from seven polls of Republican voters that were conducted wholly or partly after Trump made his comments about John McCain on July 18. They include national polls from CNN, Public Policy Polling and YouGov, along with polls of Iowa and New Hampshire from each of Marist College and Monmouth University.1

The problem for these candidates [like Trump, as history shows] is that support never grew much beyond 20 or 30 percent of the vote, so they were lapped by others. The same is likely to happen this year, eventually. Suppose that Rubio bows out of the race, for instance. Where is his 6 percent of the vote likely to go? Probably to Bush or Walker before it goes to Trump. Relatively few voters say Trump is their second choice,3 and many Republicans dislike him. The same goes for Christie’s 3 percent or Kasich’s 4 percent. That will add up for someone. (Candidates who fall within the establishment “ring” of our circus diagram have 53 percent of the vote in polls already.)

I don’t mean to suggest that favorability ratings are foolproof. Like the first-choice numbers, they can fluctuate. Before Trump officially declared for the presidency last month, his favorability ratings among Republicans were execrable. They improved after he announced his candidacy but have since slipped back to mediocre (well below the standard of candidates who have won their party’s nomination in the past).

But if you’re going to imply that a candidate is popular based on their receiving 20 percent of the vote, you ought to consider what the other 80 percent thinks about him. Most Republicans who don’t plan to vote for Trump are skeptical of him instead.

The fact that some of the posters here think that hitting back is ‘bad’, and that they ‘might’ be justified in trying to hold the bully who’d kicked them in such a way that he couldn’t kick them again (assuming they had the strength and size to do that in the first place, which they probably didn’t or the bully wouldn’t have attacked them in the first place) is probably a large part of the reason why bullying is so prevalent in our liberal dominated school system and society today. Bullies know they have nothing to lose so why not go for it?

I don’t follow the logic here. You are saying that a person is probably being bullied because they don’t have the size and strength to retaliate, and that the solution to this bullying is for them to retaliate. Because responding to violence with violence leads to less violence. I am sincerely confused.
