We’re on the federal Do Not Call registry. Several months ago, I got a telemarketing call from a mortgage company that (foolishly) identified itself by name during the course of the call. I informed them that I’m on the federal Do Not Call list, and the person on the other end very quickly hung up the phone. But I had the company name, so I filled out the form to report a violation on the donotcall.gov website, not really expecting anything to come of it.
Cut to last week. I got a letter from the state attorney general’s office informing me that based on my complaint and other similar complaints, they took legal action against the mortgage company and settled out of court; the agreement involves the mortgage company sending $300 to each complainant. One of whom would be me. I just had to sign a form promising I wouldn’t press suit individually.
Here’s to telemarketers buying the Christmas presents for my family and friends this year!
