For years I’ve been reading the homepage without ads… Now they’re back. Totally annoying. I’m a Charter Member in good standing, running Firefox.
Any ideas why the came back? How do I get rid of them?
Either you are logging out at some point in the process or you have malware. If you are a member and you’re logged in, you shouldn’t see any ads.
I believe the OP is talking about the Straight Dope homepage, not the SDMB main page. I see ads on the Straight Dope page right now.
I see ads there, too. But there have been ads there for a long time. Would you mind clarifying, Jake? As a member you shouldn’t see ads on the SDMB forum pages, but that wouldn’t apply to the Straight Dope column pages.
Surfing the net without blocking ads is the equivalent of having unsafe sex with multiple intravenous drug using, needle sharing, “cold sore” infected partners.
But there are downsides.
Not really. Malware infested ads are all over the internet. There is too much risk and no reward, from a consumer point of view, in not blocking ads. Yes, I know, some websites depend on ad revenue. If they go dark, I’ll be sad…for however long it takes to find similar content on another site and change my bookmarks.
I was making a joke, Oakminster- kind of a gross one, I admit. Anyway people should be careful while browsing.
I hear some adblockers make it hard to detect when others are joking.
I underestimated Marley. Figured he was going for the warm fuzzies from supporting sites he likes angle. Did not figure him to go with a joke.
Ipsum absurdum, ne exeat unicorn, I got wooshed. Or whooshed. Or whatever those dang kids call it these days.
I’m sure you won’t make that mistake again.
Gross but very funny. Raised my second laugh of the morning, the first being The Onion, Oscar Pistorius Swears Bloody Cricket Bat From Different Murder.
I don’t have ads in the forum pages, just the first page when I open the Straight Dope.
Is that what you call the column page(s)? And, they are animated! (Grrr…)
Well, I installed Adblock Plus, and can at least block ads individually. It’s a start.
Thanks all, for your replies.
