Mervyn Breaton spent part of his 87th birthday in a place he knows all too well – the prisoner’s box.
The rest of the octogenarian’s day was back behind bars, his second home for most of his life.
The Coldstream man with a criminal record dating to 1936 was in front of Ontario Court Justice Ross Webster at the London courthouse yesterday facing another round of drug charges.

His case was adjourned to May 30.
Until then, Breaton, who has resided in many prisons, including a stint at the infamous Alcatraz prison as Prisoner No. 1254 for robbing banks, is back in custody.
Over seven decades, he’s been convicted of car thefts, weapons and drug charges, vehicular manslaughter and escaping custody. In 1998, at the age of 77, he was believed to be Canada’s oldest federal inmate when imprisoned for gun-running.

Hey, Canadians were well represented in Alcatraz. The inmate who spent the longest in Alcatraz was Alvin Karpis , of Montreal. He was there from 1936 until 1962. When he was finally paroled in 1969, he was deported.
No doubt.
