I just got back from MEPS and I just got my classification in the navy! I got a 96 on the ASVAB so I got to pick any job I wanted so I chose to go into the Advanced Electronics and Computer Field. I am getting a 7000 dollar enlistment bonus and will be enlisted for 6 years. I think one and half years of those 6 will be in school so I’ll be getting paid to learn! And if I get 2 people to enlist with me I get boosted up to E2 when I leave for boot camp too! So any dopers wanna join the navy with me?
Nope. I heard the Navy is one of the best places to get gay sex, don’t tell Matt_Mcl. hehehehe I had several friends in the Navy they universally agreed (both gay and straight) that the submarines were the gayest of the fleet.
HUGS!
Sqrl
Good luck, dude.
Just keep an eye out for those Sicilian Attack Toliets, one damn near got Chief Scott back '93.
Something we Surface Sailors said, “On a submarine, 150 men go down, and 75 couples come up!”
Seriously, good luck and make the best out of it!
Oh well, nobody’s perfect, but why the frick the navy. Now you’ll be in the ranks of Chief Scott.
Congratulations TS, I hope you enjoy your term of service!
congrats kid! wish i’d joined the Navy or AF instead of the Army. got a 97 on my ASVABS and chose Infantry. d’oh!
good luck!
I know ChiefScott’s having a good time, but if I could do it all over again I’d have joined the Air Farce…
Good luck, hon…did they give you any more specifics? ET? CTM?
And, Lord Vega - I thought that 74 couples and 2 prize fighters came back up??
Have fun, dude. Try not to get sea sick.
Six year advanced electronics program, been there, done that, have the T-shirt, don’t need to do it again. I was in aviation electronics but the same stuff applies. With boot, basic electronics, A school, advanced first term avionics and finally F-14 weapons systems I spent a full 18 months in training before I ever touched an airplane. I don’t think they have automatic advancement any more but when I went it it was as an E-3 with automatic E-4 as soon as I graduated A school. Unfortunately we were known as “rent a crows” by people who felt they worked harder to be advanced to petty officer. I made E-5 as soon as I was elligible and that I earned. Invest the signing bonus wisely and don’t be tempted to get a car with it.
Sqrl, from all available evidence I saw, your information is correct and that was years before don’t ask, don’t tell. I’m straight but I don’t know why gays in the military is such a big deal, it’s been going on a long time. Look at Alexander the Great, no one ever called him a security risk.
Good luck to you!
I hope you have a better experience than my former co-worker and friend, who said that the most important thing she learned in the navy was that it stood for “Never Again Volunteer Yourself”.
Again, best wishes, and keep an eye on that Chief Scott dude.
Welcome aboard ts!
I wish you the best of luck at Great Lakes and beyond.
You’ve chosen a field of endeavor that most think they aren’t cut out for. You have an excellent opportunity to continue your education, garner new skills, see the world and put a little change in your pocket.
You will soon become a member of an elite fraternity tasked with safeguarding the freedoms which all Americans enjoy. If I may paraphrase President Kennedy when he addressed the Naval Academy class of '63, “When asked what you have done with your life, you may proudly answer, ‘I serves in the U.S. Navy.’”
Again, best wishes.
YeeHaw…Way to go…you’re going to have a dandy time.
Travel, knowledge, 5000 sailors confined to fairly small space.
Oh yeah…Good Times…Good Times
I was with the Canadain Navy 20 yrs ago. I had the best time. (until that point)
You’re going to anyways…but have fun!!
I’d say it was fairly certain that JimmyNipples wasn’t breast fed by his Mommy.
Oh Talkinsquirrel, I am so happy and so proud!!! Our military is a great place to get job experience, and after your enlistment you can take advantage of the GI Bill and all sorts of things.
BTW don’t spend all your money on toys. Save some of your twice-monthly paycheck into some kind of good savings plan or investment portfolio, and you will be in great shape when you get out. For six years you won’t have to pay for food or housing. Woo hoo!!
Again, huge hugs!!! My ex-husband was former Navy (he finished college and switched to Army) so I can root for both branches. Hooah!!
My son is in boot camp RIGHT NOW!!!
He graduates on 7/28, then goes for 9 weeks of training in Pensacola. He is going to be a CTO, cryptography. He says boot camp isn’t as bad as he expected, but he really wishes he had gotten into better physical shape. Word to the wise.
Good luck!!!
There’s a difference??? GD&R
