I'm going sailing tonight!

Mrs. Dave-Guy works summers at a camp for a yacht club in Connecticut. She got the job through her friend and colleague, Bill, who does a bit of sailing himself.

Well, FriendBill has told me for the past couple of years that he wants to get me to the club some evening for vespers. He crews with a member of the club, and every Thursday in the summer, they run a few races in the evening and have a barbecue.

FriendBill called the other night and let me know that this gentleman has consented to me hanging out with them. So, I’m going sailing tonight! Woo hoo!

Hope we don’t have a thunderstorm.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I love sailing (as you know).

In my unfinished tale of the recent Around Long Island Race, I cover some of the similar weeknight racing series’ on Long Island Sound. (Yes, I know. I’m planning to write more it soon.) Both the more serious and the more casual races can be a lot of fun.

I hope you have some wind tonight. Sitting around going nowhere can be frustrating. I believe FriendBill sails on a J-24, which should be pretty quick, even in light air.

Good luck.

I go Tomorrow! weeeeeee! rented a 32’ C&C out of the Apostle Islands (Northern Wisconsin, Lake Superior) 3 fun filled days. The chartermaster looooves me, cause I always return the boats in pristene condition, so we get to take it out the first night (most charterers are not allowed this luxery) So we’ll be anchored off Stockton Island before sunset. Who knows, maybe we’ll come accross a swimming bear again this year.

<sigh> I spent last weekend on our sailboat, but it never left the dock - and it won’t till an engine repair is made.

Have a blast! Even sitting on a boat with no wind beats sitting almost anywhere else!

We’ve had our sailboat for almost two months now - a Catalina 250. This is our first boat & my first sailing experience. While Colorado’s not exactly the sailing capital of the country, we’re learning a lot and loving it. As you can imagine, I’m looking forward to the day we’ll be on bigger water. I envy you coastal folks.

Even the North coast?

Ah, but it’s not FriendBill’s boat. He’s crewing for a member of the club.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

Though I expect you’ve already left and won’t get this till after, since I am at the end of the frickin’ earth (although I did get through to Mom and Dad about as they were walking out the door before they left):

Have a great time. Sailing is good for the soul. Raise a glass to Uncle Tommy at the barbecue. Very fitting.

BTW, The Offspring here misses the Yacht Club. She was making plaintive homesick noises when we drove past the marina the other day. Do let Mrs. Dave-Guy know what a special experience that indentured labor is for her.

NurseCarmen - yep, even the North coast unless you mean Hudson Bay - that’s a little too cold for me. But I was born in St. Paul and have Mille Lacs ice in my veins. Tho I prefer warm water, I’d like to sail the Great Lakes including Superior. Some day…

How do you know when it’s Summer in Duluth? Its the two weeks when the ice skating isn’t very good.

I’m currently making plans to go to the Annapolis boat show in October so we can continue to fuel our dream of retiring to a sailboat. Gather lots of fantasy fodder to tide us over the winter.

I’ll be at the Annapolis Boat Show!!! Every year for the last 10 or so. We’ll be going on Friday (I hope) unless hubby can’t get off work - then we’ll fight the Saturday crowds.

Look for me - I’ll be with the guy with the beard!!

No, I’ll be with the guy with the beard!!!

The Sound was very choppy, and I got seasick, and didn’t enjoy it very much at all. Didn’t stay for the barbecue after, since my stomach was still very iffy and I was extremely tired.

That’s the way it goes, I guess. If I get a chance next year to take part, I’ll be sure to take Dramamine and pray that it’s not so turbulent.

Sis, I’ll be sure the Bunting’s message gets through.

Our sailboat…

Dave -
I’m sorry it turned out to be such a bummer. Hope you get another crew opportunity before the season ends.

HomeSlice, I can’t get your link to work (“The specified server could not be found.”)

Dave, I’m sorry to hear it wasn’t so good. :frowning: Now, that’s a family failing. I’ve gotten sick standing on the drill ship when it was anchored to the dock. I’ve gotten sick painting a seascape. No, I am not exaggerating.

The University is getting a new research ship next month, which my hubby has had a lot to do with designing and building. I have been informed that I have to go to the fancy reception-thingy, which includes getting on the d**n thing and sailing around in it. I am filled with trepidation. I am also wondering what in heck I can wear that will look fancy enough but not stupid when I don’t wear heels. Because I am not wearing heels. I would end up face down in the guacamole. Ew. Actually, I think I better stay as far away from the guacamole as possible, even in flats.

SparrowHawk, you might try one of those “pressure point” bracelet thingies they sell…dramamine makes some people REALLY sleepy. My ex-office assistant uses those, and for her they work well. And she is PG, too, so I would think she would be more prone to motion sickness right now than she usually is. And she usually is anyway. Hee…I know that is convoluted. Sorry

I’m sorry you got kind of seasick, Dave hon. I am one of those lucky people who NEVER gets seasick. I have been out in the worst weather, with HUGE swells and the boat literally rocking from side to side so wildly that you could have actually touched to water. Never a twinge…in fact, I LOVED it! I know, I am a sick SICK woman. Whatever.

Anyway, both of you try the pressure point things…if they work, they are much better than dramamine, which puts people to sleep.

Cheri (Who LOVES the ocean…but prefers power boats, as she is lazy. Unless she just gets to relax and watch everyone ELSE crew the boat. Heh…worship me, I am a QUEEN…but at least I don’t make anyone wait on me…so long as they crew the boat, I will run the galley and wait on THEM foodwise!)

Good idea, Scotticher! I will try the bracelets, thank you. (Do they make fancy ones? ) Dramamine is not only dreadful, but useless. I have tossed it over the side along with the rest of my cookies.

My hubby is also one of those cast-iron stomach sailors; never even has to make the adjustment to “sea legs”. He’s been through six typhoons and doesn’t turn a hair. He’s even gone on deck to take pictures. Talk about sick.

As far as I know, they don’t make “pretty” ones. They are basically a “web-like” band that has a knob that presses on some pressure point or other that supposedly keeps you from being motion-sick. You have to understand, since I never needed one myself, I am not really up on this. But…Jenn says it works, so that is all I know.

I feel kind of sorry for the two of you…I find the motion and the wind and the salt spray over the edge of the boat VERY exhilirating. I LOVE being out on the open sea! I guess I should have been a mermaid. :}

I stayed off the lake tonight… there was a square-sail brig trading cannon fire with a topsail ketch.

Tomorrow I’ll take my potato cannon and see how they like a little competition !

That’s because he doesn’t have much hair to turn.
