I'm going to Blockbuster. Movie Suggestions?

I like comedies and horror flicks, and ratings aren’t and issue. So Dopers, got any movie suggestions for me?

Do you like Elvis? Do you like Bruce Campbell? If so, rent Bubba Ho-Tep. It isn’t terribly scary, but you could technically classify it as a horror-comedy. Bruce Campbell plays an aged Elvis Presley, still alive in an East Texas nursing home, where an ancient Egyptian mummy is preying on the souls of the elderly. It is definitely funny, and the real horror presented, moreso than the mummy, is coming to terms with old age.

House of 1,000 Corpses

People Under the Stairs

Dead Dudes in the House

If you, for some unfathomable reason, haven’t seen This Is Spinal Tap, do yourself a favor and rent it. Get the DVD, if BB has it, and you can watch it a second time with the hilarious commentary.

For a mix of “horror” and comedy, try Dead-Alive.

Club Dread for when you’re in the mood for some mindless horror comedy.

It’s not as well-known or mainstream, but I love Greenfingers, starring Helen Mirren and the ever-dreamy Clive Owen. Feel-good movie, funny, based loosely on a true story about a prison in England that started a gardening program. I really love that movie. Great ending.

Ah, this is right up the alley for the denizens of Cafe Society.
Of course I will nobly refrain from aspersions about exactly which alleys they hang out in.
Moving it on over…

TVeblen,
IMHO mod

Death to Smoochy.

If I’m ever at a loss as to what to rent, I always go with a documentary. I’ve seen around 20 or so the past months (everything from theremins to full contact fighting to spelling bees and ex-radicals) and it’s a guaranteed good watch, pretty much everytime.

I have posted it before, but my favorite horror film is Mother’s Day…the first five minutes alone ought to grab your interest. It is an old(er) film, but I think I just read that if finally came out on DVD.

For comedies, I like a lot of the “little” films that were not blockbusters in the theaters…especially some of the British independent films…Waking Ned Devine was good, Saving Grace was another…we just rented Along Came Polly and it was so-so (and that is being generous).

Army of Darkness. If you only watch one more movie in your life, make it that one.

Failing that, A Fish Called Wanda.
