My copy’s already shipped.
I saw an ad for that on TV a while ago. Since I’d seen it mentioned here before, I’ll have to hit the video store.
Maybe when I have access to a DVD player…
The Chin!!!
Actually, I saw this at the Landmark Theater here in Chicago and, although it was enjoyable, I was not overly impressed. I’ll probably rent the DVD just for the commentary, but it was nowhere near as good as Cambell’s other work.
I can’t wait to see this! I’m a huge Bruce Campbell fan, an even huger Elvis fan, and I’m always intrigued by blending horror, Western, and comedy elements (writer Joe Landsdale’s stock in trade). It never opened in a theater near me, so I plan to rent the DVD soon.
I was surprised by how much real human drama was contained in a story that seems merely wacky on the surface. Mummies are just window-dressing. The DVD is definitely on my to-buy list.
It’s mine! Miiiine! Mine all mine.
I just have to get through the rest of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi and The Vampire Effect first.
Bumped it to the top of my Netflix queue last week. I should receive it Monday or Tuesday.
burundi and I watched it on Wednesday. I was both disappointed and pleasantly surprised: it was not nearly as good as I hoped, but it was a lot more entertaining than I expected.
Most of the stuff I didn’t like about Evil Dead etc. was there: corny horror, bad camera work, silly dialogue, uncreative stunts, etc. However, there was also a pretty interesting underlying story, and even though the Elvis jokes were pretty fucking stupid (he said that the bug was “about the size of a peanut butter and banana sandwich”–HAW HAW HAW), I still found myself snickering through the groans.
There are definitely people that I won’t recommend this movie to. People who are movie snobs aren’t gonna hear about this from me. But it’s the most fun I’ve had at a bad movie in a long time.

What are the extras on the DVD, and are they any good?
There’s commentary by Don Coscarelli (the director) and Bruce Campbell, and another commentary by “The King,” which I presume is Campbell as Elvis, but as I didn’t get a chance to listen to it I have no idea. There’s a bunch of extras on costuming, the mummy, the score (which I really enjoyed), and a bit of Joe Lansdale reading from the Bubba Ho-Tep short story. I thought the Coscarelli-Campbell commentary was good, although it lagged in parts.
I don’t know, but I’m buying anyway. You can always borrow my copy. It’d be a great double bill with JCVH ;j
I heard part of the “King Commentary”. It’s campbell doing his Elvis impersonation like he’s MSTing the film.
Like at the beginning with the German filmstrip abou the mummy, “The King” wonders if it’s going to be a foriegn film. He rambles about this movies and trying to figure out the plot and purpose of this one, trying to figure out if it’s a porno or a horror or a comedy or something else. I’m told that at one point he begins telling the audience how to make those Peanut butter and banana sandwhichs, and another point says something like “This Bruce Campbell guy will be lucky if he ever gets work after this movie”.
Quite amusing
Rented it last weekend; I wasn’t much impressed either.
I was all ready to love it, forgive it its excesses, etc., but there just weren’t any excesses. It was tame, tame, tame; the screenplay was flat and full of embarrassingly predictable Elvis jokes, the pacing was catatonic, and that final “climactic” scene was jaw-droppingly amateurish. At first the camera work looked like it was going to be interesting, but after they’d used the same neat-o effect three times in five minutes it became an annoying gimmick.
Sorry to be excessively negative, but I was really looking forward to seeing this one, and it was a major disappointment.
Oh yeah, there was one line I loved: “What do I care? I got a growth on mah pecker!”
Well, I already own Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, but I don’t mind another excuse to watch it again. And hey, if you don’t have it already, we can make a swap. just be careful crossing over 183 on that bike, I’ve had enough friends get hit by cars lately
