I'm going to have to drop out of my half marathon

I’m so upset about it. I was doing really well - rising to the challenge, all that. I mean, sure, I was really slow - I could have been walking faster than I was running four and five miles, but I was getting it done! I was worried about not being able to finish fast enough, not about not being able to complete the training. But then I went out of town and didn’t find myself able to run like I wanted to, and now I’m sick again with a horrible lung-quivering cough, and if I could start back on my program TODAY I’d still be weeks behind.

I knew it was kind of a long shot at my current fitness level, but I was so psyched about it. :frowning: I’m going to plan to run the women’s five miler here in May and try to be really on track to train for the Marine Corps Marathon this October, but the whole thing is very discouraging and depressing.

When is your half?

May 3. I’d done one five mile long run before I got interrupted. (It took me an hour and a half, which is a Problem.) So I have a month and a half, but I still can’t run without coughing up a lung.

Whoa! You were planning on doing a half-marathon in May? Didn’t you just do the Couch-5k back in like, September? You don’t fool around when you set goals, do you? I was planning on maybe, possibly, perhaps running a 5k this sometime this summer, maybe. I’m completely out of shape from 3 and a half months of no exercise except lifting the junk food to my mouth, and I just started running again yesterday.

Keep hope alive, though! It sucks that you can’t do this half-marathon, but with the extra time to prep, you should totally own the next race.

Also, would this be your first race?

I was afraid that if I didn’t have a specific goal with a date and a check already sent in that I’d quit.

ETA - I ran a 5K in late December, although I didn’t do well - I was recovering from sinus problems then. Haven’t had good luck with the breathing lately, I guess. My mom got a medal, though!

Sorry to hear it.

I’ve found that my Half training has pretty much taken over my life. All I do anymore is run. when I’ve gone out of town I’ve search the web for local running routes. That seems to help keep me motivated when I’m out of town. I’ve also made a point of staying at hotels that have a fitness room so if the weather is bad I don’t have an excuse.

If you think the Half this may is an unrealistic goal maybe find another half a few months later and try for that one. If the your original one offers a quarter, go for that so that you’re still training for something.

By the way, in your other [over] training thread you mentioned having a Garmin. Which model, and are you happy with it?

Take the necessary time to heal and get back into shape. Trust me on this, trying to run through an injury is not a good idea and you will wind up doing yourself more harm. A short layoff to heal sucks but it is far better than making it worse and taking much longer to get back into shape. Find some other activities that you can do without aggravating the lung; walking or stretching or resistance training, etc.

The miles will always be there waiting for you.

I got the 305 because I read so many reviews of the newer one not being as good. I love it - it really helps me a lot. I’m sure it does stuff I don’t even begin to know how to do, but I use it to keep me going - if I let myself walk when I “feel like I have to” I’ll never run. If the thing on my wrist beeps at however many miles, then I can go until it beeps.

It’s also been very helpful since I’ve been running these longer runs in my neighborhood - to avoid big hills or bad neighborhoods or big roads I’ve been having to make a lot of turns, and using the mapping function lets me do that and still have an out-and-back course (so the back part feels shorter, of course.)

I wasn’t sure if I could get used to the size of the unit, but you do.

Thanks for the info.

Keep up the training for your 5-miler…it will only get easier.

Like the others, get better first, then get back to it.

Maybe set shorter goals at first. Aim for that 5 miler or 10K work up to 15K/10 mile before setting sights on a half.

I know it’s rough having to give up a goal but sometimes things happen you can’t control, just roll with it and don’t stress too much about it. That’s how small injuries/illnesses become major.

I thought you were sending this from your iPhone while you were running your half-marathon. Too bad, I was going to goad you on to finish it!

Heh, that’s so like me. I’d start, like, ten threads. “Should I pee now or pee later?” “I hate these fucking bridges!” “Runners: makeshift blister remedies? Need answer fast!”
