The current situation is finally starting to sink in. This is the end of Saddam Hussein, no matter what, and I’m starting to think I’m going to miss the guy.
He’s really the perfect modern-day bad guy, and has been for decades. He’s the antagonist, the evil-doer. He’s not so monstrous that people feel sick just hearing his name, like any number of famous dictators, or a person like Osama bin Laden, but he’s appropriately bad enough that we all know who he is, and can count on him to always stir up the hornet’s nest, rattle the sabre, and give everyone in power a headache. Cold, sharp, ruthless, charismatic. Just the perfect bad guy.
Who’s going to take his place? Kim Jong ll? Sure, he’s the likely next-in-line, but he’s no Saddam. Kim’s a joke, a goofy comic book villian, which is partly why no one is taking the guy seriously these days. Saddam has class and charm, strongly built, a general and fancies himself a king, lording over a country rich with culture and history. Kim’s an ugly runt that fancies himself a god, lording over half a country rich with starvation and poverty.
Sure, for what Saddam has done, I’m going to be glad to see him dead, but come on, he’s occupied a part of all our hearts, I think.
how about that weasel KEVIN TRUDEAU who does all those infomercials. the guy who has a “scientist” named Bob Barefoot who has some calcium tablets which cure cancer.
And the best part is all of his advisors seem to have the same stupid mustache. The shot of his speech audience was perfect because they all had the same hat and the uniform, and the looked the same. They looked exactly like a generic group of clonish extras perfect for a army of evil.
But in the South Park movie, Saddam is already dead. If anything, the war will make the movie more up-to-date (except that in real life, Saddam will probably get killed by a missile or an M-16 rather than wild boars).
Castro became “laughable” just because of the passage of time, Guin, but in his prime he was the kickingest America-antagonist in the land. AND he had true style. I think he’s going to hang on slowly fading 'til he dies a centenarian just so he can outlast all his contemporaries who ran off to Miami, just outta spite.
Kim Jong Il, indeed, is something of a comic-book figure. Oh, he’s dangerous as hell, but as a person he just does not generate that aura of personal toughness.
Lessee… Hmm… Idi Amin is still in exile/sanctuary in Mecca, AFAIK. Probably too old to bring him out of retirement, but for a while he looked like the perfect International Evil Villain. Colonel G/Q/Kh/addafi has mellowed out in middle age. Khomeini’s dead, Aidid is dead, the Sandinistas are a graft-riddled opposition party in Nicaragua (and the contras are a graft-riddled ruling party)…
However, I will agree with gatopescado and say that the only ones “missing” Saddam will probably be those actually shooting at him.
He looks like what an Asian man would have been drawn as in a racist cartoon from the 50’s. The crazy hair, the glasses, the dopey smile. Although apparently the wild hair has a purpose:
