I'm going to teach ESL...encouragement needed

ESL. English as a Second Language. 3 elementaries and one middle school. Considering I did not go to college to become a teacher, this is a little intimidating. On the other hand, I desperately need the money and this is a full-time gig. Here goes nothing…

Try to find an experienced teacher who can mentor you. It makes all the difference in the world to have someone you can ask questions.

Let us know how it goes, and good luck!

Good luck! You’re going to be doing good work! I have often thought about helping in this way. Years ago, before kids, I was a literacy tutor, precisely because I knew then that the now-me wouldn’t have time (which I don’t). So more power to you. It’s a worthwhile job to have!

Definitely get a more experienced teacher to help you get started. Whenever you can, try to observe a lesson. The middle school probably has a department chair who’ll get you aligned with the rest of the teachers.

Being consistent is very good for ELL, doing and saying everything the same way, each time. The higher the level, the more changes you can make in routine and vocab. Good luck, teaching ELL is very rewarding.

Anyone can teach ESL, just ask any teacher who teaches anything else!

Energy is key. Repetition is also critical. Review yesterday’s lesson everyday. Go slowly and let the students set the pace.

Learning a language is tough, even for bright bulbs. You have to use every trick in the book to get the grammar and vocab into them. (What are the student’s first languages?)
