I'm going to the Antiques Roadshow Saturday!

The only problem is that everything I want to take turns out to be crap when I research it on the web. I may have to borrow some things from friends. Has anyone else gone to the show? Will it be fun, lots to see, even though I don’t know anything about antiques except what I read in Lovejoy novels?

So far we’re taking an Underwood typewriter, a silver vase, a camera and a quilt top, but it could change at any minute. Wish my family had had some taste and money!

You must come back and tell me how it went. I watch that show whenever I can-- in fact, I’m watching it now. I’ve thought about what I would take. And then I realize I own nothing older than my marriage.

They were just in the Seattle area this past weekend. Some of the hints supplied by the newspaper last week include plan on standing in line for long periods of time, up to 2 hours. Arrive as early as possible, only a certain number of folks will be let in. Use a wheeled cart or wagon for anything that weighs more than 20 pounds. You will have around a 1 in 1000 chance of being selected to have your item appraised on tape. Only about 1/3 of those will actually be used on the show. And the average appraisal given is usually about 10% of what the owner thinks the item is worth.

Racer72,
That is the old method. I did it about 3 years ago with my mother. We got there (Columbus, OH) at about 6:30 AM, stood in line for about an hour and a half, got our tickets to be let into the second session, starting at about 1:00 PM, I think. We had breakfast, then went back and stood in line. We actually got in to see the appraisers sometime after 3:00. A very long day, since it was a 2 hour drive to Columbus, then another 2 hours home afterward.

This year, they did a random drawing for the tickets, so you have them beforehand and know what time to show up. The details are here.

Kittenblue,
While we had a long wait in line, it was actually kind of fun since we got to see what other people brought and talked to them as we crept along. Be sure to take 2 things per person. You want to be sure to have some kind of cart for anything at all heavy. And you never know what things will turn out to be worth. All in all, it was a very fun day. We have tried to go back, but have not been able to get tickets last year or this year. Have fun and be sure to ask people about their stuff, they will be happy to tell you.
