I just applied for the Auxiliary Special Police Force in my home town. It’s a volunteer (not paid) position. The training takes about 6 months, and includes
First Responder first aid course
Red Cross BLS (Basic Life Support) first aid course
Brown Book Exam (general knowledge of law in my state)
Firearms Combat Training course
Then I’ll be able to direct traffic during the Forth of July Parade!
I think it will be a lot of fun and really cool, especially the Firearms Combat Training. Here’s the way the whole thing was explained to me, it’s the equivalent of being a deputy in the old westerns - I’ll have a separate, independent career, but when the sheriff needs to round up a posee (or there’s a parade) to track down the bad guys (or to direct traffic), he calls me.
You live in Massachusetts too don’t you? What town if I may ask? I would like to do something like that too because I like guns? What are the requirements? The problem is that the police in Holliston don’t seem to like me much. I got into just enough trouble a few times to piss them off but not enough for them to do much about it. I have never been arrested which many philosophers use as proof of a higher power. I am good with guns though.
Yes, I live in Marblehead. The requirements are a clean driving record (mine’s not great, but not so bad as to be an issue), clean criminal record, valid License to Carry in MA (that’s the biggie), then there’s the intangibles like you have to interview with a committee, get approved by the Chief of Police, then get appointed by the Board of Selectmen. So, all in all, it’s more of a political thing than a law enforcement thing. The advantage is that if you’ve got any connections on the town council, you can probably get them to go to bat for you with the few local cops that hold a grudge against you.
