The secret to a job like that is to get out there, look around and fill out applications. You won’t be able to think of a specific job and go get it, you need to go into every building you see and fill out an application.

Visit car dealerships and see if they’re hiring people to clean the cars. Check golf courses, landscaping companies, recycling companies. Check any warehouses in the area and any manufacturers of anything, even if you don’t know anything about what they do. You may know nothing about the medical field but could still get a job at a medical supply warehouse. You may know nothing about cars but a dealership may need someone to drive service customers home. You may know nothing about boats but the boat manufacturer may need someone to take parts from one area and give them to the people building the boats.

My company just hired a 20 year old with no experience at that rate just to sweep and clean and give everyone else a helping hand if needed. He wasn’t looking for a job in our field, he just saw us and decided to check us out.

Nobody’s mentioned Rocket Scientist yet?

My company hires people several times a week for much more than $12 an hour. You would think it would be easy to find such people, but it isn’t at all. The interviews are very basic - Can you show up on time almost of the time? Do you have a reliable means of transportation? Are your scared of heights (picking boxes using high-rise lifts is a basic requirement)?

Oddly enough, it is the transportation and dependability questions that cause most people to get crossed off most commonly but that applies to any job. An astoundingly high percentage of people freely admit that they can’t be expected to show up when they think they have better things to do.

It isn’t even a male/female phenomenon. Many of the best workers in my industrial environment are long-term female workers. It is an individual characteristic that we have have learned to spot instantly in interviews. There is no degree required. It is just basic manufacturing and distribution that requires some basic knowledge that can be learned on the job but, the most important thing is to find people that will actually try and learn skills over time. Those that make it are treated unusually well in the overall compensation package but they are surprisingly hard to find.

You REALLY need to find another job, and leave the Portland Visitors Bureau behind. That one is just sucking out your soul…

Wonder how long it will be until the OP asks about his brakes again?

Two things I’m wondering:

The OP is 21, with a high school diploma. What’s he been doing with himself for the last three or so years since graduation?

And also, how can the OP’s parents be “extremely old” if he’s only 21?

They’re like, 50! Ancient!

He could have parents who had him late (I’ve got friends who had a baby at 40), or, more likely, he just has a 21-year-old’s view of what “extremely old” is. (You know, like 50)

You could be a drug mule. Despite what everybody says, once in a while ignorance is a good legal defense.

Or, if you’re bad at dog-walking, you have a convenient place to bury one or more dogs.

“Shaddap. It’s natural fertilizer.”

ETA: That last line is also applicable in the non-burying scenario, so it’s a double-win.

Look at them yo-yos That’s the way you do it. Play the guitar on your MTV.

[SIZE=“3”]If you’re looking for a job in the music or art industries tatoos and piercings won’t hurt anything. Otherwise, stop making yourself look like a kid: Get rid of any metal on you face and cover up tats that are exposed. You can put it back in after the interview. People that do the hiring for a company that service other people likely do this day in and day out and are going to hire the people that will make their company look the best. If you want to really shine buy a book on how to interview because you’ll be surprised on how much more there is to interviewing than you think. It’s a lot more than just answering questions for people that do this as a livelihood. Once I read about about interviewing, I realized many people probably talk their way OUT of a job rather than talk themselves into one because it is so easy to accidentally say the wrong thing!

Good luck, Phu Cat
