I'm Having Problems in Bed. Please Help.

Heh, heh. Made you look.

My problem is that I am damn uncomfortable in bed. We currently have a not-very-good futon on a platform. I would like to purchase a new bed.

What type of bed/mattress would you recommend, and why?

Thanks in advance,

Bean

I prefer a fairly firm mattress with a nice, soft pillow top. But the best quality of all in a bed, is my hubby beside me…AWWWW…(gag, puke, nobody asked for that mushy stuff…)

Nyquil works for me.

Or a shitload of Vodka, either way works fine.

Try a wooden plank. Monks swear by this.

king-sized beauty rest with the pillow top. An firm bed with the soft top and pocket coils is heaven. We got ours for our 10 year anniversary.

Also important is comfy pillows

Dude, do NOT get a waterbed, ok? I had one for a while, and I have about fifty horror stories involving my problems with it. Things like the heater breaking down (the human body does not quickly heat over fifty gallons of water), the pedestal breaking, leaks, leaks, and more leaks, (one night I woke up buzzing. Literally buzzing. The bed had leaked, and it had gotton to the heater so electricity was being conducted through the water). Dude, my waterbed experiences make me sound like a Citadel grad. Sucked to be there, but I can laugh now. Unless you are a sadomasochist, stay the hell away from them.

Granted, my waterbed was really a cheap piece of shit.

Go down to the local ‘Sit and Sleep’ for an afternoon and lay on all of them. One of them will feel better than the rest. For a mattress, spare no expense.

I think you should get one of the neato race car beds. Think of the fun you and Mr Bean could have! Vroom vroom!

I have a body pillow. It’s the same width of a regular pillow, but it’s about 4 feet long. I couldn’t sleep without it! I wrap an arm and a leg around it and suddenly I’m in a very comfortable snoozing position.

Spray a little cologne on it, and poof!, it’s like you’ve got a man to hold in your bed!

Thanks for the advice so far!

FYI–we will be getting a queen size. We are willing to spend a lot of money on the bed. (although some of the “specialty” beds that cost over $1000 are just too expensive.) We own this house and are not planning to move in the forseeable future, so portability is not an issue.

My story:

I have never met an inner-spring mattress that I liked. I got myself a futon as soon as I got to college. I do sleep on inner-spring mattresses frequently, because I travel a lot, and I have never felt as comortable on an inner-spring as I have on a futon (or a therma-rest!) When Mr. Bean and I got engaged, my mom purchased a queen-size bed to replace the twin in my old room at home-home so we could be comfortable when we came to visit. Wasn’t that an awesome thing for her to do? Problem is, and don’t you dare tell her this, is that the bed is super-uncomfortable! I know she didn’t go cheap on it or anything. But this reinforces my distaste for inner-spring mattressses.

I have 2 ten-year-old futons from Options in Pittsburgh which are excellent. Problem is that they are full-size and Mr. Bean and I need a queen. About 4 years ago, (as soon as he met me :o) he decided to chuck his horrifically uncomfortable twin-size and get a queen. (a queen-size mattress, you pervs!) He knew I liked futons, so he purchased one from White Lotus Futons in New Brunswick, NJ. They were supposed to be the best futon shop in town. Well, the futon stinks. It is hard and unyeilding, the corners are way fatter than the middle, and the fit-and-finish is not very good. I have tried all sorts of things to make it better, but nothing has worked. The mattress is a dud.

I’ve been having a bit of insomnia lately, and yesterday I realized that I just didn’t WANT to go to bed, because the bed isn’t comfortable. So, I guess it’s time for a new bed. Bt what kind of bed to buy?

I ventured into the wild world of the internet yesterday in search of information about beds, and really came up short. There were lots of sites with general advice, like “buy one that you find comfortable,” but few with information of the specific questions I have. Plus, almost every mattress site was somehow related to a seller of mattresses. I decided I needed the straight dope, and so I am turning to the teeming millions. A search on the subject turned up a very recent thread wherein an adorable female poster asked for bed-shopping advice. She got lots of very general advice and lots of propositions. I have some speicific questions, so I thought I would start a new thread.

So, here is what I would like to know:

–Why are inner-spring mattresses so much more popular than futons? What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages?

–What are the differences between the brands of inner-spring mattresses? Are there any objective reasons why a Serta is better than a Sealy, etc.?

–Are there specific health benefits to certain types of beds?

–What are the environmental considerations when choosing a mattress?

–Are the “specialty” beds, like SelectComfort and Dux really that much better?

–What is the deal with latex foam mattresses?

Thanks!

Green Bean, you didn’t fool me you kidder. After that story you had awhile back about how and hubby snuck off in the woods at a wedding reception … so you could answer the call of nature, made me realize you lack the wicked streak for a good salivating sex story.

Do NOT get a waterbed.

Get a nice pillowtop or one fo those Select Comfort mattresses. I love mine, It’s incredible.

I’ve covered this before in Swiddles bed thread.

The floor.

It is very comfortable, and as big as you need it to be. I’ve been sleeping on the floor for three years, its great. And when you travel, even a Motel 6 will feel like luxury.

Wanderer- I am laughing so hard that Mr. Bean thinks I am choking! I totally forgot that I posted that story! :o

I read this thread with disbelief. You are sleeping on a futon ALL THE TIME? You’re nuts! There is no comparison between a good inner-spring mattress and a futon. The reason mattresses are so much more popular is because they’re so much better in terms of support.

Futons are what you have for guests to sleep on, not what you should be sleeping on regularly.

I must respectfully disagree. What do you mean by support?

So, you are saying that you should give your guests a bed that you find uncomfortable and inferior?
