My resumes have never really caught they eyes of Personnel types.
I want to give a writer a chance to make me look good.
I put an ad in Craigslist, and I have several offers.
My concerns–
[ul]
[li]How do I know if they are any good?[/li][li]How much of a risk is identity theft?[/li][li]What would you call a fair price?[/li][/ul]
Do you have a degree? You might forget craigslist and start with your alma mater’s alumni association or career services. There’s no guarantee they’re better than a stranger, but they’ll at least have experience and more importantly they’re probably free.
I don`t mean to besmirch resume writers but I’d say on average a fair price is $0. It’s just too unlikely you’ll actually get someone with a real talent for writing and knowledge and experience relevant to your career. Without the latter they won’t be able to apply their writing skills to make your resume great.
Honestly you’d be better off posting your resume here and asking for suggestions.
Assuming you can find some competent writer, can’t you just falsify some of your personal information when dealing with them? Incorrect birth date, etc.? And once you get the final document, you can just correct the false parts.
Resumes don’t contain birthdates, SSNs or credit card numbers. Just your name, address and phone/email. The first three of those are already in the phone book, so a resume is not exactly a goldmine of PII. (Personally Identifiable Information)
I review a number of resumes every year. Aside from gross typos and being over 2 pages long, I really don’t care all that much about the format of a resume.
What counts is what’s in the resume; not how pretty it looks. Things like experience, degrees, certifications, and so on.
Now a cover letter is a somewhat different thing. However you should personalize the cover letter towards the company or job to which you are applying.
Also consider that many companies just want you to copy and paste resumes into their computer system. All the nice formatting goes away.
I’m with Fuzzy Dunlop - don’t pay someone for it. It’s not worth it at any price.
Honestly, there are plenty of places online (and probably even this board) where you could post an anonymized version of your resume and get feedback for free. Actual, good feedback, as opposed to whatever trash you get from a resume writing place.
