Is anyone else? Let’s talk about what makes him so amazing.
Hmmm. Apparently not a lot of other fans here . . . .
He’s obviously got a great pop sensibility. Then he marries that to a mordant/morbid sense of humor, which makes for an interesting juxtaposition. You don’t often hear a poppy uptempto song with the line “Contemplating suicide, or a graduate degree.” In fact an interesting drinking game might be to listen to one of his albums and pound one everytime he mentions death or dying.
Then his slow stuff goes well with his kind of thin, raspy voice.
He’s kind of shot himself in the foot careerwise. He was on SubPop, I think, and then quit or lost his contract or something and did “side projects” (I always thought you had to be successful and established before your goofing off qualified as a “side project,” but oh well). Like many indie guys, he may be a little too indie for his own good.
