I agree, but could you at least give us the gist of the interview?
What, you’re just finding this out now?
I did the hard work of reading the article AND his infamous Playboy and Rolling Stone interviews from 2010 (not having followed the whole kerfuffle back then) and it amounts to: Mayer destroyed his career by being a weird pretentious douchebag with verbal diarrhea, tries comeback by playing the repentant sinner, but turns out to still be a weird pretentious douchebag with verbal diarrhea in this very interview.
Yes. I really think the man can’t help himself. It’s almost like your drunk uncle that you know will make a scene at Thanksgiving, but he also makes damned good stuffing so you indulge him sometimes (I personally don’t mind JM’s music). And his new song, Still Feel Like Your Man is about the yachtiest yacht rock you’ll ever find.
Maybe he is. I don’t know. Maybe the song is closure… or maybe he’s trying to see if she’ll have him. Maybe he’s ‘lost in lets remember’ like Billy Joel in ‘Keeping the Faith’.
I will say its beats the hell out of the cheesy “Shade” meme a lot of pop stars are falling back on.
I’ve never really cared one way or another about the guy in the past, but he did find his niche playing with Dead & Company (a band with a handful of Grateful Dead members where Mayer ostensibly fills the Jerry Garcia spot). He’s extremely solid in that role and has earned the respect of the former Grateful Dead members and, generally speaking, of the fans. I’m happy for the guy and happy that he’s able to bring joy to a lot of Deadheads by honoring both Garcia and his music.
Original thread on his douchiness- Oh....you're *that* stupid; got it (John Mayer's Playboy interview) - Cafe Society - Straight Dope Message Board
Mayer is a great player and songwriter (if you like his style) and seems to be a smart, articulate guy who reading had no idea how stupid he was sounding. I hope he actually has turned a corner.
I had no idea who he was until he joined up with Dead and Company. A bit hesitant at first, he earned my and the community at large’s respect and admiration as a gifted guitarist. This is a community that doesn’t give two shits about who he was dating or what a ghastly ego he has; it’s a music-obsessed fanbase that thrives on delving into note-by-note analysis of someone’s playing.
In turn, he’s shown nothing but respect for the audience, music and genre at large (see e.g. this ad).
I have no other grounds to defend him (have never read his ‘Playboy’ interview and still have no interest in who he is sleeping with) except his music post-Dead & Co. and the tiny bit of quotes I’ve seen here and there.
The OP-linked article was a pretty shitty read, but it seems like the writer was out on a salacious trip of their own — or maybe I don’t read enough celebrity tabloids to appreciate the writing style.
Maybe it’s there, but I’m just not seeing pretentious douchery in the quotes the article used.

Posting an OP that consists of nothing but a link is unconstructive. If you have a topic you’d like to discuss, then post a new thread containing that discussion. For now, since you didn’t have anything of your own to say, this thread is closed.
