For the past several months, I have been periodically experiencing horrific bouts of diarrhea. It starts out as constipation, and bubbling gas builds up behind it. It is excruciating at times. Eventually, I poop about 5 or 6 times, then finally the offensive liquid noxiousness leaves my body, and I feel better.
This was happening 1-2 times a week. At first I thought it was mild food poisoning of some sort, but it only happened to me. No one else in the family had it. Now I think it might be lactose intolerance.
So I’m keeping a food and poop diary, to see if there is some kind of connection to the foods I eat. I also suspect IBS, with which one doctor diagnosed me a long time ago. I didn’t have these symptoms at that time, so I kinda blew off all her dietary restrictions. She was a freak anyway - no chocolate? No coffee? Yeah, right.
And since I’ve started this diary (10 days ago), I haven’t had any bad experiences. I have had some of the early signs though. (Lots of gas and bloating.) I’ve been trying to stay away from milk products.
So, any comments? Pointing and laughing is OK, too.
Very sensible…I kept a food and bm diary once as well to help me figure out what foods i ws developing an inability to eat comfortably, and found some fun things -
anything really fatty or oily [animal fats or vegetable oils, canola being the most offensive to my digestive tract, olive oil the most gentle] will cause digestive problems such as diarrhoea. Fatty dairy like an oily cheese will give me gas and the runs. Most dairy products over a certain amount will cause upset stomach, the runs and gas. I can get away with one large mug of cofee light and sweet with heavy cream in the morning and before bed.
Solid foodwise, I tend towards the least fatty meats I can, being atkins. I cant do lots of bacon or sausage because the fat will give me problems so I prefer to stick with fish and seafood, boneless skinless chicken, turkey, well trimmed pork [in general loin because it is less fatty] well trimmed beef and rarely 80% ground beef. If I make weisswurst, I grind the meats myself, and choose the leanest cuts of veal and beef amd just enough pork to make it moist, and use whole milk powder instead of cream.
Don’t forget to test what nuts and spices you might be allergic to, i have one friend allergic to peanuts, and another friend allergic to tree nuts, but oddly enough they can both eat seeds [sesame and sunflower] which give me problems because of the fat content.
[though you might have reason to suspect possible gallbladder/bile problems if you have trouble with fats like me.]
I keep a poop diary. Nothing I eat seems to trigger my symptoms (I have the exact symptoms you describe, as does Ardred), but stress does a bit. Hormones have a huge impact as I’m much more susceptible to it just before and after my period.
Mine usually hits either while eating or immediately after. Then I’m hungry again.
Everything I’ve read indicates IBS. My mom has the same symptoms and has been diagnosed. Try a fiber supplement.
I’d rather live with it than give up caffeine.
Just wait till you’re relaxing at home and you think all you have to do is fart… but you were wrong. This has happened to Ardred and I both. What a day ruiner.
Yeah, sounds like IBS. I haven’t really noticed a connection with any one food but I recently (in the past few months) stopped eating a lot of processed wheat products (yeasty breads) and sugars and I’ve lost 12 pounds and haven’t had many bouts of it. I occasionally buy a sandwich or junk food treat but they haven’t set me off. I am not organized enough to keep a poop diary though.
And there’s no way I am giving up coffee or chocolate either.
